Doggy Drama

I was looking through my last post, trying to think of which thing to update out of all the little updates I gave last time I wrote. Then I saw the picture of our cute little puppy, Storm and realized that I needed to update on that little situation.

You might have noticed that the puppy on my Instagram is a different puppy then the one in my last post. Well, it’s a story that would have been too long for an Instagram post. So here we are.

We have been shopping around for puppies for a while. We switched between what types we wanted and when we were gonna get one for a while. Our boys have wanted a puppy for a while now.

First we were traveling too much overseas, there’s no way. Well, we settled in California. Check.

Then we were living with my parents. I was not adding another being in that house that didn’t need to be there. We bought a home. Check.

Then my husband got on the fire department and the academy is really difficult. So there was no way we were adding one more pressure to our lives then. He graduated. Check.

Then he was on probation, and while it’s easier than the academy, it’s still an added pressure. And we didn’t need yet another pressure at home. He finished probation and is now a regular firefighter. Check.

Well, we ran out of excuses, the boys had been proving themselves responsible by completing chores and staying on top of things at home, so we knew it was a good time. I knew I didn’t want to spend the enormous amounts of money for a purebred dog, so I shopped rescues in the area. There are a lot in LA. We eventually found these little Pitbull puppies that were adorable.

I was a little weary about owning a Pitbull because I’d never had one and of course they have a bad reputation. But my husband grew up with them and that’s what he wanted. So I gave in considering that he didn’t want a puppy at all, and at least he liked this breed. We surprised our kids the week before Christmas with Tchalla, a little Pitbull puppy. Except he wasn’t little at all.

(Tchalla is the name for the character Black Panther from the Marvel series – our kids’ favorite super hero. In case you were wondering, since everyone else was. lol)

Eli and Tchalla

We brought Tchalla home and he was a good puppy. He listened, didn’t whine or bark much, he loved us and was great. Then, actually it happened the first night we had him home, he was sitting on Eli’s lap and Eli was petting him, no one was being crazy or anything. I was talking to my brother on the phone and out of no where, he jumped up, started barking and attacking Eli. Eli jumped up, crying, onto the couch behind me and the dog kind of stopped and we put her outside.

What the heck? Nothing provoked her, it was out of no where, the boys weren’t even being crazy! But I thought maybe it was a fluke, so we decided to keep it on the low and stick with it.

A few days later, a similar thing happened. My mom was watching him for me while I was at volleyball practice. She was playing with him and talking to someone and out of nowhere he attacked her. He was barking and angry and bit her hand. Had he been full grown, that would have been a different story and not have ended well.

It was so sad. I cried and cried and cried. I wanted it to work. And besides those random attacks, he was such a good dog! He was sweet, he listened, when he needed to rest, he just went by himself, it was great! But I have too many kids at my house between my own and friends and family that I didn’t want to risk something worse. I couldn’t live in fear of my dog attacking someone.

We decided to give him back. The next day, my mom and I went to the rescue and returned him. I felt horrible, but he needed a home without kids and an owner who could handle that better. I just knew I couldn’t and I didn’t want to.

I also want to say, I don’t think it’s the Pitbull breed. Who knows what happened to this dog before he was rescued, I think it was dog specific, not breed. And a different owner might have been able to deal with it better, but I didn’t feel equipped enough to handle it.

The same day we went to another rescue and that’s where we found Storm. She was a part of a litter of 11 puppies. Her mother was rescued from a situation in Houston after Hurricane Harvey and brought to this rescue to be adopted. Her mother is part Rhodesian Ridgeback and Boxer and I’m guessing that the dad was lab or part lab because she is all black and neither Rhodesians or Boxers are black.

She is a cute, loving little puppy and we are happy to give her a loving home. It was really hard for myself and my kids to give back Tchalla, but I knew it was the right thing to do.

So Storm’s name comes from the super hero Storm from X-Men — who by the way marries Tchalla in the Marvel comics — and because she came to us because of a storm in Houston, Texas!

Oh, I forgot to mention – all this happened while my husband was at those fires. I had to handle this all by myself. I know that doesn’t sound like the biggest of deals, but let me tell you. I was so stinking tired, from single-momming it and from having what is very similar to a newborn at home. It was emotional and I was so drained!

Maybe a tad bit dramatic – specially looking back at it all. I realized my life isn’t that hard and I can stand to suck it up a little bit!

So you can look forward to seeing Storm in some Instagram picks and here on the blog! She is a part of our family now and we love her! Now if only she would sleep through the night…
