I have been rather inconsistent in writing my story! I actually had to go back and read where I left off. I’ll write a tad of that here but if you want the whole story here’s the chapters:

one // two // three // four // five // six // seven // eight // nine // ten // eleven

And quick question – would if I put this story into a book? Refined it, added more details and made it a real life book? Or maybe a book for Kindle. Would anyone be interested in that? It’s getting rather long! lol!

***************************************************************

Continuing from where I left off last time…

Until one night. I was sound asleep when my phone rang. It was a mutual friend, Rick.

Me: “Heellloo?” In a groggy, sleepy voice.

Rick: “Have you talked to DM? He talked to his dad earlier this evening and no one has seen him since! I’m coming over.”

Oh my gosh, what happened? I knew that his relationship with his dad was a little shaky. I knew that it had been a little hard recently but I hadn’t talked to him in a couple months, I had no clue! Of course I didn’t know where he was! But being woken up in the middle of the night by a friend about the man that you care about — that was scary. I got dressed and went down stairs and waited.

At this time I was living in a house with 7 other girls. It might not have been the brightest idea, that many girls in such close quarters, but it was still a fun experience. My roommate was my best friend Lauren. Thankfully, she was in the bed next to me sleeping that night and heard my phone ring and me answer it.

After what seemed like a lifetime but was really probably only 5 minutes, there was a knock on the door. I rushed over and opened it. Rick was there, but wait… what?

As I opened the door a trail of guys filed in behind him. With each guy I took a step back and a step back. Then at the very end of the line was him. Delivery Man standing there with a little smirk on his face.

Wait, what? Had I been played? You mean he has been fine this whole time and now he’s right here? I didn’t know what to feel, I was shocked. He came over and held me as I slowly dropped to the ground. Remember, I had just been woken up out of a deep sleep.

It turns out I had been played and I was a part of a big revenge plot that I had no clue about. The other girls in the house had a rivalry going on with these guys and had pranked them earlier on. Well, as we learned that night, it’s not wise to prank a group of college boys.

But I didn’t care. I was sitting there with DM while the guys ransacked the house. It was literally me and him sitting on a little chair just talking while there was a whirlwind of chaos going on around us. Cereal boxes being emptied all over, clothes being taken out of dressers, even taking tires off of a car. I generally heard some noise in the background, but after we had been forbidden to see each other, this was the only moment I could steal away to be with him. And it was great.

Then the razing was over and he had to go. All the boys filed out, the damage was done, and their work there was finished. It was the middle of the night now and I had to be up early to go to work. But those simple moments with him were enough to get me through with the little sleep I was gonna get.

But it turns out not everyone in the house had such a lovely evening. As I lay there trying to sleep all I could hear was the girls cleaning up the horrible mess. No regard for people who had lives to tend to the next day. Vacuums going, girls talking, walking up and down the stairs. Ya, no sleep was going to happen for me that night.

I walked out of the room to ask them to stop.

“Seriously you guys? I have to work in like 3 hours! Could you keep it down?”

“Well, if it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be in this mess!! I can’t believe that you let them in. I mean seriously, whose side are you on?”

“What? I didn’t let them in! I was knocked out sleeping and Rick woke me up with a phone call! I had no idea what they were doing! Ask Lauren, she was there.”

They believed me, but they were still mad. It didn’t bode well for our relationship in general. I knew they had a feud going on, but I had no idea what the guys were plotting and no clue they were going to use my heart strings as a way to enter the house.

Life went on. We still were banned from seeing each other and talking. We’d steal away a phone call now and again but that was about it. I dated other guys because that’s what I did, but none of them came close to DM. It was almost like a waist of time except I’d get a free dinner and a movie from time to time so I figured it paid off.

The basketball season was coming to a close. I knew I was going to be able to talk with him soon, but I had no clue what would happen. Would he want to be with me? Was he even interested? I was anxious about it, and that way I knew how to deal with that was to keep busy.

So when a friend, an old volleyball coach and now my boss (I coached volleyball and he owned the club I coached), asked if I wanted to go to Vegas, I thought ‘Sure! Why not!’ DM had a game and if they lost it would be his last game. But I was certain they wouldn’t lose and that I still wouldn’t be able to see him. So why wait around, right?

This friend was completely plutonic for me. I am not sure if he felt the same way, but in my head we were just friends. Off to Vegas we go. It started off great. We were enjoying myself, I gambled with his money and won $300, we had a lovely dinner, it was nice. Definitely helped take my mind off DM. Then, on the second night there, my phone rang. It was him. They had lost the game and he wanted to see me and I was in Vegas with another dude.

CRAP.

to be continued…

Hair is a funny thing. Most of us have it and most of us have a hard time dealing with it. I learned this the other day when one of my seemingly simple hair tutorials was featured over at Buzzfeed as a hairstyle some of the ladies were trying out. Only one of the 5 girls said they could do it and liked it. I have since learned that maybe my tutorials need to be even easier and that maybe starting at the basics over here would be a good idea.

So how about starting with the best hair products for a each hair type? I must say that when creating any style, if you don’t have the right kind of products, it’s just not gonna be as easy. Hair won’t stay, or be as voluminous as it would have been if you used product. It’s a sad fact, but a fact nonetheless! Now, on the other hand, if you use the wrong products, your hair might not turn out the way you want. Let’s discuss…

The Best Hair Products for different hair types

best hair products for different hair types

I love to blow dry hair. I don’t know what it is, but it’s fun for me. Not so much my own hair, that’s quite a bit less fun, but other people’s. So when I am around my mom, I always make sure to do her hair. Then, of course, she brags to her friends that she has a personal blow dry bar and they want the same benefits! Now I have a little clientele going and I’m like a mobile blow dry bar! Good thing I love it!

Through doing all kinds of hair, I’ve come to see what products work best for what types of hair. My mom, for example, has very fine hair. She has a lot of it, but it’s fine. When I use the same products that I love on my hair — specifically the smoothing serums, it just flattens her hair. On the other hand, when I blow dry another friends hair which is extremely thick, I can’t use any volumizing product because it would just be too huge! You get the picture!

So I am going to break down the best hair products for three main hair styles today – thin, thick, and frizzy hair. If you don’t fall into one of those categories, leave a comment with the types of hair you have and maybe I can do a follow up post!

Okay, let’s do this!

For Thin Hair

best hair products for thin hair

Thin haired gals want volume! And guess what ladies — it’s possible! I get comments on some of my hair tutorials “oh I wish I could do that but my hair isn’t very thick.” Well, that’s a big myth. You can do it! Sure things will look a little different, but I honestly think that thin hair is easier to work with. I have thick, heavy hair that gets weighed down and slips through bobby pins. With the right products, thin hair will do whatever you want it to! Here are the best hair products for thin hair.

  • Mousse: I like the Biolage mousse because it’s a great hold without making your hair feel tough or crunchy.
  • Volumizing Blow Dry Gel: This stuff is amazing. Just a dime or nickel size drop in your hand, rub them together and then apply it to damp hair. No need to do the roots, but a little ways down all the way to the ends. The difference in volume after you blow dry is incredible. Perfect for ladies with thin hair!
  • Root Pump: Another amazing product and perfect for ladies looking for a little extra help in the volume department. It lifts your hair at the roots and helps create volume that lasts throughout the day. It also makes it so much easier to style or to add a little lift with a teaser comb. I use Big Sexy Hair Root Pump or Aquage Uplifting Foam. They are both fabulous.
  • Hair spray: Thin hair shouldn’t have too hard of a time staying in place with a little bit of hairspray. This one has super great hold and smells delicious! You’ll definitely want something like it.

You should stay away from any kind of smoothing serum or oil. This will just weight your hair down. Of course, if you’re looking for smooth, straight hair, then those products are okay. But if you’re looking for a voluminous blow out, don’t use them.

For frizzy hair

The thing about frizzy hair is that it’s dying for moisture. That’s why it’s frizzin’ out. You want to make sure you have a good moisturizing shampoo and deep condition often. Products also play a huge role in reducing frizz. This is where oils and serums come in handy. Here are some of the best hair products for frizzy hair.

The key to maintaining frizzy hair is trying to not let it dry out. Deep condition often, use moisturizing shampoos, sleep on a satin pillow case and don’t brush your hair often if at all. If you have curly hair, check out these tips.

For thick hair

Just like with thin hair you don’t want to use serums because they will weight your hair down, with thick hair you can steer clear of the volumizing products. They won’t negatively affect your hair as serum would thin hair, but you just don’t need them. I have included a light weight root pump in case you do want a little help at the roots, but it might not even be necessary if you have thick enough hair. Here are the best hair products you can try for thick hair.

  • Mousse – using a mousse like this Pantene one will give you some texture to help you work with your hair better, but won’t be too much or add to the volume. This TRESemme is also a good choice.
  • Hair oils – I love my Dove Pure Care Dry Oil. I think I love the Orofluido more, but the Dove does a great job and isn’t as expensive. If money’s not a problem, get the Orofluido, if you’re looking to save & still get a great product, get the Dove.
  • Leave in conditioner – You don’t want to weight down your thick hair, but you do want to make sure it’s moisturized. The It’s A 10 leave in conditioner lite is a great option.
  • Root lifting gel – I know  I said you didn’t need volumizing products, and it’s true. But sometimes our roots just need a little bit of help. The Pantene volume root lifting spray gel is a good option because it gives a little volume without expanding your hair too much. I have gotten quite a bit of use out of this product!

What I use

best hair products

Now that I’ve covered three main hair types, I thought I’d share what I use regularly. I don’t use product every time I do my hair, but when I do, these are the ones I use the most.

  • Leave in Conditioner – straight out of the shower I add my It’s A 10 leave in conditioner lite. I spray it half way down and mainly to the roots. Then, if I need to, I use a wide-tooth comb to comb through my hair. Sometimes I just leave it or comb through with my hands. I try to follow these tips on maintaining healthy hair.
  • Orofluido – After the leave in conditioner, I add a small, dime-sized amount of Orofluido to the ends of my hair.
  • Roots – I love a good root pump. For me I feel like it helps my hair feel cleaner longer and definitely helps with volume. I have lately been using Big Sexy Hair Root Pump and really love the results. Another great product is Aquage Uplifting Foam.
  • Blow Dry Volumizing Gel – I haven’t experienced a product like this one. The way that it works on my hair is fabulous. I have generally thick hair, but this just maximizes he volume and gives me thicker fuller hair. I love it. I don’t know if there is a comparable product, to be completely honest. I have also tried the John Freida Spray and it works but I prefer the Big Sexy Hair.
  • Hair spray – I don’t always use hairspray, but if I’ve styled my hair and I want it to stay, Control Addict is a must. It smells fabulous and definitely holds everything in place without making it stiff. Love this stuff. Another great hairspray is Bumble and Bumble.

PHEW!! Did that help you out at all? I hope you get a chance to shop these products! By the way, this isn’t a sponsored post at all and these are all products that I either use or have used so I feel good recommending them. Feel free to ask any questions in the comments or e-mail me, I’d be happy to help if I can! Or, like I said, if I didn’t mention your hair type, leave it in the comments and I can maybe do a follow up post.

Also, you might have noticed that these products do overlap a little. You really need to find what works for your hair. For example, I really love Big Sexy Hair dry shampoo. I’ve tried a ton of others that people have recommended and from really great brands! They just didn’t work for me. So I’m sticking to what works! Same goes for you! I am recommending these products because I know and love them. I would suggest giving them a try. But in the end, find what works for you!

I also didn’t mention curly hair here because I did a whole post on how to care for curly hair here!

Okay – have a great weekend!

One of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe is my chambray shirt. I bought mine while I was in Sweden a little while back and man was that a good decision! It’s slinky, not stiff, it fits great, and it’s long enough which, for this 6-foot-tall gal, is a pretty big deal! I thought it’d be fun to showcase how to wear a chambray shirt. I personally think everyone needs one in their wardrobe! I don’t like to say you need things around here, but if you’re looking to add to your wardrobe, you can’t go wrong with a chambray!

how to wear a chambray shirt

how to wear a chambray shirt

So versatile, right? It’s really the perfect piece for your wardrobe. It’s traditional between seasons, it goes with so many things, it’s comfortable and it’s cute. Let’s do this.

Chambray with a Maxi Skirt

how to wear a chambray shirt: with a maxi skirt

Maxi skirts are pretty awesome too. They’re like crotchless yoga pants, ya know? I know they seem like more of a summer thing, but I honestly think they’re more transitional pieces. Because when it gets so hot, the maxi skirt just traps the heat in there. But for spring, this is the perfect outfit. Nice flowy maxi skirt with a comfy chambray and you’re good to go! I tied my chambray shirt right above the skirt to give me more shape. When you’re wearing something flowy on bottom you want to make sure you have more of a fitted top.

Chambray shirt with a dress

how to wear a chambray shirt over a dress

This outfit was part of my 7×7 Remix I shared the other day. This dress and chambray top turned out to be one of my favorites. The dress has no shape at all, it really needs to be belted or cinched somehow and the chambray shirt was the perfect way to do it! My henna was so pretty too! It’s all faded now.

Chambray shirt with Colored Denim

how to wear a chambray with colored denim

The jean color really can go with anything. These jeans are a peach-isn color, but red, pink or purple work too! I half tucked the front of the shirt and chose a belt to go with the shoes. I like this look!

Chambray with Denim

how to wear a chambray with denim

When I think of denim on denim I go straight to Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the VMAs years ago. Not a pretty sight. But if done right — and not over done — it can look super cute! This outfit was also part of my 7×7 remix and I wore it on our camel riding day. I added the leopard scarf to break it up a little bit and paired with my cute booties! I also like that the denim isn’t too match-matchy, the colors are just off.

Chambray all dressed up

how to wear a chambray dressed up

Who says a chambray can’t be fancy? It’s not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think of it. But tuck it in a cute, fancy skirt with a cute belt, some nice heels and a fancy necklace and you’re all ready for a night on the town! I really like the contrast between the denim and the faux-sheer skirt. The necklace is simple but sparkly and it brings the outfit together.

Chambray shirt with shorts

chambray with shorts

It might be a tad too early to be thinking about shorts as I’ve seen a good part of the world is freezing (via Instagram). Here isn’t so bad, I was able to wear these shorts for a picture! It was cold, but the sun was out and that’s something to be excited about here. A chambray shirt would look great with any pair of shorts. You could even mix some of these suggestions and pair it with some colored shorts or denim shorts. The options are truly endless! Oh and please excuse the supa white legs. Haven’t seen the sun in a while!

Chambray shirt over another

how to wear a chambray shirt over another shirt

Remember how I said transitional? This is the perfect outfit! You can layer it over another shirt for a lightweight jacket. This is perfect for late spring when it starts to warm up or even for layering during the winter. And this too was an outfit for my 7×7 remix!

Chambray shirt layered

how to wear a chambray shirt layered under

This one might be the most practical right now with everyone’s winters! Just throw your favorite chambray shirt under a warm sweater and not only do you have a cute outfit, but you’ll be nice and warm too!

Chambray with leggings

leggings and a chambray

I have to admit, this is one of my all time favorite outfits. It’s not the same chambray shirt as the other pictures, but it’s oh so comfy. It’s over-sized and I love it. I pair it with my favorite pair of jeggings from No nonsense. A pair of booties and we’re good to go!

If you already have one, then you are all set for ideas on how to a chambray shirt! If you don’t, I have put together a few options for you to find one!

wear to buy a chambray shirt

Now you’ve got some options – shop away! This will be a timeless piece that you will wear for years to come, it’s so versatile! It is one of my favorite over all pieces, I really think you won’t regret it!

I hope you all have a fabulous day!

Last week I wrote about our time spent in the airport in Marrakech. It was not a fun way to begin the trip. The trip did get better after that and we only had one more hiccup along the way. I thought I would share my experiences in Marrakech, Morocco with you guys so you can laugh (or cry!) along with me!

Traveling with kids is not easy. It’s not always fun and you’re not always appreciated in the moment. But the memories it creates, the experiences that your children have and the way it opens their eyes more to the world make every second worth it. Even if you’re stuck in an airport or throwing up in a hotel.

Marrakech morocco

Once we finally left the airport, we were ready to see the city! Except we had wasted most of the day away and I did not want to go out at night. I didn’t feel like it was a dangerous place, but I was a single white woman traveling with two young kids. I didn’t want to risk it. We found a restaurant nearby and ate and then relaxed at the hotel.

See, the thing about Morocco that I wasn’t really prepared for, was that everyone is out for your money. I mean, I’ve been to places where they try to hustle you, but this was different. I am generally a naive, innocent person and it did not bode well for me. Let’s start with the camels…

camels in Marrakech

There was a kind (or so I thought) gentleman who took me from the airport to our hotel and stopped on the way to grab our money from Western Union. He charged me $15 for the whole trip which come to find out was a little expensive. But he said, of course, that it usually is $20 so he was giving me a deal. I didn’t really believe the deal part, but I was just thankful to be on my way. He gave me his number in case I wanted to go somewhere.

ride camels in Marrakech

The next day I called him to head out to the camels at the Palmeraie. I had read that you could ride camels, have a nice lunch and enjoy the day a little bit outside of the city. I thought it’d be a perfect way to start this trip. Long story short, the guy ripped me off. Charged way more for the camel ride and said it included lunch but it did not. I spent way too much of my budget on the first day. I am sure my driver that took me out there got a cut for bringing a stupid tourist around and it just made me sick. I felt so used. However, my kids were so happy to be able to ride the camels and it was a lovely experience, I just wish the money situation turned out differently. Oh well, lesson learned!

I really enjoyed exploring the city with my little guys. We had to do it a little differently than say if I was traveling with my husband or just a group of people. I wanted to make sure to stay safe! Because of that we didn’t venture into the souks. It made me nervous trying to keep my kids with me while people are haggling you to buy things all the while holding on to all my belongings. We stuck to the square and just around it.

Marrakech food

One evening we asked our taxi driver to take us some places to eat. BIG mistake. They too are all in it together. The taxi guy took us into the souks to this little street that didn’t have much on it and I’m not sure I could have ever found my way out! As we walked in the walls were decked out with little tiles everywhere. It was actually kind cool. I am not sure if it was typical Moroccan or just overly touristy. Anyway, I open the menu and $30 a person! This was a tourist spot. The taxi guys get a cut when they drop off tourists. The food was great and it was actually a fun experience, but we ate at a typical Moroccan restaurant for $25 TOTAL. So ya, scammed again. Stupid white girl. My kids loved the experience though so it made the price hurt a little less.

tea in marrakech

The next day we found a driver outside of our hotel that was willing to take us to some of the gardens. He was very pleasant and took us to a garden that wasn’t really for tourists. However, at this point, I was wary of anyone who ‘nice’ because they all seemed to have other  motives. He didn’t make me pay right away and waited in between gardens… Hmmm this doesn’t seem right. When I asked the price, he wouldn’t tell me! I pushed and pushed but he just kept saying “good price for you!” Yeah right. We’ll see.

Marrakech 3

It was pretty though! Those are the orange groves. The orange juice here was to die for!

Marrakech 14 Marrakech 5

The second garden he took us to there were some guys that asked to use the taxi just after us. He said he’d be back in ten minutes. Well, I still hadn’t paid yet! So I said okay and we went in to tour the gardens. They were pretty but honestly not anything to die for. But it was free and I was tired of having to bargain for everything.

Marrakech 6 Marrakech 7

Well, sure enough when we exited the garden, he wasn’t there. Ugh. Now, I am an honest person, I don’t want to not pay this guy who took us these places. So we waited a minute and crossed the street. We looked at a taxi that was waiting and it wasn’t him. We waited a few more minutes and he still wasn’t there. I had no choice but to take another cab! I wasn’t about to be standing on the side of the street in the middle of no where in Marrakech by myself with two kids waiting for a cab that would come who knows when! I felt horrible about it, but I also felt like I didn’t have a choice.

menara marrakeh

A few days later when we were leaving the hotel to walk somewhere there was a taxi driver outside that was trying to get my attention. I thought he was just bugging me to use him, so I ignored him and kept walking. When he ran up next to me, I thought it was a little weird! He explained that his friend was angry that I left and that I owe him money blah blah blah. At this point I was so sick of all these people being greedy and mean I had had it. I told the man what happened, that I waited and he wasn’t there and there was nothing I could have done, I wasn’t going to wait with my kids for him there. I would pay him later when he would take me to the airport.

He was there in the morning to take me to the airport. He wanted to charge me $40 for all of it. Just for a little perspective, it costs me $3 to get from the hotel to the city center and that was about a 1o minute drive. There is NO WAY what he did was worth $40. I got him down to $20 and he was so pissed. When he dropped me at the airport he didn’t even look at me or say bye or thank you. I actually had give him $27 and it wasn’t until he was in the car and saw that did he look out the window with a smile. Sheesh.

horse ride in Marrakech

Another thing the boys really wanted to do was to ride the horse and carriage they had there. Can I just say that Marrakech is not a place for PETA. It didn’t look like the animals were treated the greatest… Just sayin’! Anyway, off to bargain again to get the price of these carriage rides down to a decent prices. I read it before I left, that you need to bargain for everything, it’s just the way it is over there, but MAN it’s tiring!! Not to mention my oldest son didn’t really understand what I was doing and why and he constantly thought that we didn’t have enough money! I had to reassure him that we were okay. Oh the responsibility-ness of the first borns!

spices in Marrakech

On the horse and carriage ride around the city, our man stopped at a spice shop. Another way to get foreigners to spend money and they get a cut, but this time it was right up my alley. Spices and herbs and oils oh my! I ended up with some Argan oil, which is native to Morocco, some essential oils and a little perfume bar the boys liked at that moment and then all of a sudden couldn’t stand a little later. I could have spent so much more money in there, but I’m sure it was over priced. This is where they served us some fresh mint tea and it was good.

orange juice in marrakech

Then it hit. We had dinner in a little Moroccan restaurant. Not touristy at all. I don’t know what it was, but something was bad. Early Saturday morning, something like 4:00 AM after tossing and turning all night, Eli — my little guy — asked for some water. Neither he nor I were feeling too hot, so I thought it’d be a good idea. After a couple sips — you guessed it! — he barfed ALL OVER THE FLOOR. And then again on the way to the bathroom. Basically everything he had eaten was now on our hotel room floor.

You know how bad it sucks to take care of your kids when they’re throwing up? And then when you’re feeling nasty too? And then when you’re in another country? Without your better half? YEP. All those things. And it sucked. After I got Eli cleaned up and in bed, it was my turn. Thankfully, I have better control & aim, so there was no clean up. After that we both slept a little better but still felt pretty nasty.

My other son, on the other hand, didn’t have whatever we had. He was fine. Thank goodness he is such an awesome kid, otherwise that would have been hard! He got up before us and took his Legos in the bathroom so he wouldn’t disturb us and just played. Not a peep out of the kid until I went in there to check on him. He then got a little hungry so he went down to breakfast by himself.

We basically slept the day away. Then, in the afternoon when we were sitting just outside our room (to use that internet that didn’t work in our room) my older son got hit. He raced to make it to the toilet and just missed. All in the entry way of our hotel room. At this point, to be honest, I didn’t have it in me to clean it up. I just called housekeeping. To sum up the rest of our lovely Valentine’s Day, me and Tae threw up another time each, slept it off, and that’s it.

Thank goodness we felt better the next day. We had one more day in Marrakech and we wanted to make the most of it. I didn’t feel too hot, but we headed out anyway. One of the coolest things about blogging is that — I don’t even remember how — but I had met a friend named Amanda. She is married to a Moroccan and now living in Marrakech. We decided it would be fun to get the kids together to play. It was a very nice afternoon, I only wish I had done it earlier in the week!

Then we set out to find a place to do our Henna tattoos. I knew the boys would love it because, well, a tattoo!! Down to the center we went except this day it was packed. Snakes, monkeys, dancers — it was crazy!

jemna el fna marrakech

Just to give you an idea of how lovely these people were, just after I took this picture a man came up to me and said “You pay for picture!”

It was Sunday. I had spent 5 days in Africa with kids by myself. I had been haggled and bargained with and taken. And I was done.

“I didn’t TAKE a picture.” I said with my firmest voice.

Yes, a lie, I know. But I was prepared to erase the picture if it was really that big of a deal. His response?

“F*CK YOU!”

Well, okay then! Let’s get out of here kids.

We got our Henna and were out.

henna in marrakech

Peace out Marrakech. I will not be seeing you again.

Overall, I am so glad we went. You know why? Because as time goes on the pain of being sick, the annoyance of the people trying to scam you, and the rudeness in general just fades away and all the great memories stay. I can already see my kids remembering the fun stuff we did. Showing friends their tattoos and talking about camels. And that makes it worth it!

I cared for my skin from the inside out with Aveeno® Active Naturals as part of a sponsored post for Socialstars. All opinions & tips are from yours truly! #Aveeno

As you guys probably know, I love to travel. Any chance I get to jet off to a new place, I’m there. With or without kids! In the last 9 months I’ve traveled to 4 big American cities and 6 different countries on three continents! Throughout all that traveling I’ve learned to pack a mean carry on bag. And after having my coconut oil taken at customs traveling to Prague, I learned some valuable lessons about travel beauty products!

Today I’ve rounded up 6 travel beauty products that I don’t travel without. They’re compact, practical and do a great job at what they were made for! Let’s get to it!

6 Travel Beauty Products you Need!

travel beauty products you need #Aveeno

All of these are under the 3.4 fl oz allotment given for liquid products to travel on a plane so you can throw all of them in your carry on bag. This is practical for a short weekend trip where you don’t want to check any luggage at all! I try not to check luggage whenever possible even though sometimes it’s inevitable. However, even if you do have to check a bag, you can still toss these in your carry on to make sure that they arrive with you at your destination!

Mouthwash

You guys. When I went to Eastern Europe I forgot my toothbrush. Like completely. I didn’t have a tooth brush with my for the first couple days of the trip and it was nasty. By always having a small, travel-sized mouthwash in your beauty bag you will always be sure to — at the very least — not have bad breath. It will do until you have time to find a real toothbrush. I wish I had brought some! (Lesson learned!)

Dry Shampoo

This is specially important if you’re traveling a lot or staying in hostels. I did not feel like using the hostel showers in Prague and Budapest (although Budapest’s was really nice) and I most certainly didn’t feel like washing my hair! Dry shampoo to save the day. In Morocco last week I didn’t wash my hair at all and got creative with dry shampoo and braids. Perfect combo for traveling!

Compact Razor

Not only is this little razor super cute, it’s so practical! Just keep it in your travel beauty bag so you’re always ready to go. This way you can ensure that you never have to use those cheap, gross hotel razors ever again. Yuck.

Blotting Paper

These babies are actually just really good to have in your purse, you never know when you’ll need them. Specially if you’re traveling during the hot summer months and your face is getting a little bit dewy, just whip one out and blot away the sweat/oil and you’ll be all fresh! They’re also so small they won’t take up any space at all.

CC Cream

You guys know I love my Aveeno® CC Cream. I used it in my 5 minute makeup tutorial a while back and continue to use it daily. I love it. It is the perfect travel makeup. It’s not too heavy, you don’t need any brushes or sponges to apply and it’s small enough to throw in your carry on! I didn’t even pack my heavier foundation on my last trip – this was my go-to the whole time. Not to mention that this already has SPF 30 in it, so no extra products, no extra sunscreen, just bring your Aveeno® CC Cream and you’re all set!

Aveeno® Positively Radiant® Makeup Removing Wipes

Aveeno makeup remover wipes #Aveeno

Guys. These wipes. I have never used wipes like this before. I didn’t know how amazingly practical they are! Not only that, but affective as well! I was sold in an instant. You probably know that I use the oil cleansing face method to wash my face and I really do love it. However, it’s not the most practical – toting around glass containers of oil isn’t the easiest to travel with. Nor the fastest method in town. There are some nights where all I want to do is fall into bed but I refuse to do so without washing my makeup off. Aveeno® makeup removing wipes to the rescue! They are also perfect for travel because you have no small containers, no liquids, you can slip them in your carry on bag without a hassle at all and have your face cleansed in no time at all.

Aveeno makeup remover wipes #Aveeno

In Prague when they took my coconut oil in the airport I was pretty bummed. Not to mention I was left without a facial cleanser! (No toothbrush or face wash – it wasn’t pretty!) I didn’t have these wipes at this time, but MAN would they have saved the day!! I have since learned my lesson and they now come with me on every trip.

They are made with ACTIVE NATURALS® Total Soy Complex, which is known to enhance skin’s radiance and even out skin tone. It is such a gentle cleanse and won’t dry out or irritate skin. It also removes all traces of makeup which is obviously what we’re going for here! I use them before I wash with my oil cleansing method (when I have time). I know I don’t have to, but I like that they remove all the makeup first and then I get a good oil cleanse after. Not to mention my skin feels great!

must have travel beauty products #aveeno

So do share — what are your must-have travel beauty products? If you haven’t checked out these Aveeno® makeup removing wipes, you simply have to. They’re fabulous. And coming from Mrs. Makes-Her-Own-Products, you know they’re a win!

It’s round up time!!

If you followed along on Instagram or joined the challenge, you know what I’m talking about. Last week me and Molly created a fun little challenge to dare you to make the most of your wardrobe. More often than not we are pressured to buy more, that we need more and that more will make us happier.

Well, I don’t buy it!! I think we can be just as happy, if not happier, will smaller wardrobes and less items of clothing. That’s why I love this 7×7 remix challenge. If you’re new to it, let me give you an overview. Basically you take 7 pieces of clothing and wear them as many ways as you can for 7 days — doing your best not to repeat. The challenge does not include accessories or shoes, so you have some freedom there.

I really feel like I should live my life like this. I really really enjoyed this challenge this time around! Since I was taking my trip to Africa while on the challenge it was the perfect way to pack light and still wear cute outfits. I felt great every day — outfit wise — and all the outfits weren’t hard to create. I almost think I could have created more!

Now today is where we share all our outfits and reveal the winner of the $50 gift card!! Here were the items I was working with:

7x7 remix

  1. Jeans
  2. Gold Jeggings
  3. Pattern shirt
  4. Cream Sweater
  5. Gold Dress
  6. Chambray
  7. White flow shirt

At first the all seemed rather boring and like not much of a challenge because they were in the same color scheme. But I still feeling like I was able to create outfits that were unique from each other as well.

7×7 Remix Challenge

7x7 remix challenge

 Day one:

7x7 remix day 1

I was still in France for this one so it was chilly. Going between the two countries with such different climates was difficult, but it actually all worked out! You can’t see here, but I layered the chambray shirt under the sweater and then added the gold knit scarf. It was warm and I felt cute!

Day 2:

Day 2

I had completely intended to shower, wash my hair, style it nicely, put on some lovely makeup and rock this day. Well, I showered and washed my hair and that’s as far as I got! We had a friends birthday party and I had to pack the boys and myself and get everything set for our travel day. We also stayed in a hotel this evening to get to the airport nice and early for our 6:00 AM flight. I am not wearing a stitch of makeup here, as I’m sure you can tell. I also almost felt like I cheated with this scarf as a shawl. It changed the style and color scheme of the whole outfit!

 Day 3:

day 3

We got stuck in the airport for 5 hours, but we arrived! Another no makeup day and really laid back over all. The weather was a lot warmer so I didn’t have to worry about layering so much. I wore the pattern shirt with the chambray over and the gold jeggings. I like to wear my riding boots when I travel because they’re easy to get on and off. I also always have socks on which is perfect for the security lines in airports. I have never worn this outfit, but I liked it!

Day 4:

day 4

We rode camels on day 4!! I knew we were going to be doing this so I wanted something comfortable and practical. So I went with Denim on denim, half-tucked my chambray and added a leopard scarf to break it up a bit. To be honest, I’ve never been a fan of double denim, but I like this look a lot!

Day 5:

day 5

This was probably my favorite. I got this dress at H&M a little while ago and I love it. It’s flowy and comfortable and I really like the golden color. It doesn’t have much shape, but with a cute belt cinched at the waist, you’re good to go. I paired it with my purple-ish tights (what color are those?) and an old scarf that happened to go perfectly! And isn’t the backdrop amazing? A taxi driver took us to a little ‘garden’ that really only locals go to. The boys fed the fish and we took pictures. It was really pretty! My son took this, nice job, huh?!

Day 6:

day 6

So… Day six we got attached with something. The flu, we ate something bad, a nasty little bug or something. It was bad. Me and my little guy threw up during the night, then me and my other son during the day. Way too much throw up going on for a vacation! Needless to say, I did not change out of my pajamas! This picture is from the day after that when we met up with friends who live in Marrakech and then headed to the center to get our Henna tattoos! It is actually somewhat on a redo since I wore this plus the chambray the first day. But I was sick and not thinking correctly and I give myself a break. :)

Day 7:

day 7

This I did back at home even after the 7 days was done. Because of my sick day and travel day I had missed one of the seven. I did not want to not finish!! I also had this outfit in mind and really wanted to wear it. Although, of course, it works a lot better in the warmer weather of Morocco! I just tied the chambray over the dress for some shape and a pair of booties finishes it off! I would have worn tights or something with it because it was cold, but I was inside most of the day.

I think the two dresses are my favorite outfits of all! What about you guys, which ones did you like? If you completed the challenge, what did you think? Was it hard? Would you do it again? I know I am gonna do it again soon!!

And now for the WINNER!! There were a few of you who completed the challenge as well — you ROCK! Molly and I promised $50 to one winner to spend where they wanted, so here it is! Without further adieu… chosen with random.org, the winner is…

@gracenote30!

Congratulations and thank you so much for playing along!! Hope more of you can join next time!

Have you done a challenge like this? If so, what did you think?

Last week I was in Africa. I still can’t believe we went. My kids have a 2 week vacation from school every 6 weeks and my husband can’t really leave because of his job so we thought “where should we go?” It’s no shocker that I love to travel and I try to hit up places I haven’t been yet so I can add more countries to my “been there” list. I haven’t been to Africa or Morocco and there were good deals and cheap flights so… why not!

Some might call me crazy. Sometimes I would agree. By myself I took my two boys — ages 4 and 7 — to Marrakech, Morocco, Africa. And you guys…. it was an adventure. I want to tell you because it was a sad, and funny, and crazy and hilarious and I-can’t-believe-this-stuff-happens-to-me kind of trip.

For starters we staying in a hotel that was close to the airport in France so that it would be easier to get to our 6:00 AM flight. The beds were comfy and they left you slippers and it was lovely. I always get the nicest hotels for one night. We woke up and got up and out without a glitch. The taxi driver charged me $30 to get to the airport which I thought was a little steep, but I didn’t think it was going to affect me. Little did I know…

We slept a lot of the way to Marrakech which was exactly what we needed. When we woke up the food cart was coming by and since we hadn’t eaten, and my kids will starve if they miss a meal, we decided to bite the bullet and buy the airplane food.

We ordered it all, started eating and drinking what they gave us as I went to pay. My American card is always a little bit of a mystery to foreigners so I expected that, but I didn’t expect it not to work.

It didn’t work.

The stewardess finally gave up and gave my card back and just said don’t worry about it. I felt so bad. We were totally grubbing on food we didn’t pay for. Little did I know that the Moroccans would make that money back from me while visiting…

Now, my husband and I plan pretty carefully our finances. In retrospect, the way we worked out how I would get money on this trip wasn’t too wise, but it really would have been hard to avoid. We had it set that my spending money would come out of an account with the same card I used on the plane. Ya, the one that didn’t work…

My heart sank. “Oh crap. I am going to be stuck in the Marrakech airport with no money and no way to leave!” The guy reassured me that it was the machine, so I tried to calm my worry. However, the feeling still lingered. The movie “The Terminal” kept flashing through my mind and I was trying not to think through where to sleep in an airport with two kids. “Don’t jump the gun, Natalia. You’re probably fine…” Famous last words.

We arrived and got through customs fine. We walked through and I walked past the first money change kiosks that I saw because I read that they were more expensive and walked on to the others. Went up to the first one and asked to take out money using my card. They don’t do that, he says. Use the ATM machine, he says.

Okay, easy enough. I went over to the ATM machine and tried it out. Invalid pin? Say what? I lost my card back in December and had to get a new one so that might have been it, but man, this was a bad time to find out. I tried at the next kiosk and then the next. No such luck.

Well, I was a responsible traveler, I had brought a back-up card. It was a credit card and we don’t like to use credit cards to take out money, but hey, being stuck at an airport in Africa was not on my vacation ‘must do’ list, so we were just wanting to get things done at this point.

No such luck.

You guys, I spent almost an hour on the phone with Capital One trying to get that card to work. They had put a freeze on it, probably because I tried to use it out of the country. I spoke with person after person doing everything they said and they still couldn’t take the hold off it.

“You’ll need to fax in paperwork.” Weeeeellllll, I’m in an airport in Africa, how should I get that done?

“Okay, the next option is to verify these questions.” Sure, hit me.

Verified. “I’m sorry, that didn’t work. Now your account is locked. We need to you find a bank we can talk to to verify your info.”

Okay, sure thing. I don’t know how they’ll do that in Arabic or French, but whatever, let’s do it. I found the bank, talked to the lady working there, thankfully she spoke French, and she said she’d speak with the Capital One people. So I called them back and the lady told me I needed to call another number. Okay, I said, give me the number. As she starts saying the numbers, I realize is the same number I called to get to her!

To make a loooong (5 hour) story short. It didn’t work. None of it. Capital One did not want me to use my card. It never got fixed and I got stuck with $147 cell phone bill in the process.

We got into Marrakech at 9:15 Wednesday morning. We left the airport at a little after 2:00 that afternoon.IMG_7319

Thankfully, my kids are troopers, self-entertained, and frequent travelers. Yes, my little man is just laying on the ground. After a certain point, you just stop caring about germs and such. I would also like to say I kept my cool the entire time.

But I didn’t.

I might have gotten mad at my kids at one point. I might have yelled. I might have cried and got told my a stranger that I shouldn’t cry in front of my kids. He might have gotten a really weird stare from me because… huh? And then I might have finally threw my hands up, sat down and watched a silent Tom and Jerry movie on repeat for 2 hours.

So how did we finally get out of the airport? My husband had to Western Union me money. Yep. Thankfully they’re on every corner around there, so it worked out, but man, that was a long morning!

We checked into our hotel, found a local spot to eat, the boys swore they wanted to swim (it was warm for France, but still COLD.) They jumped in and then right back out. Which was exactly my plan so we could go back to the hotel and relax. We watched a movie and went to bed.

Day one in Marrakech, Morocco, Africa.

** The other days won’t take this long to tell, but I had to share my ‘stuck in an airport’ story!

You guys may have noticed by now that I like to make some of my beauty products at home. I have gone to a completely natural face care routine and couldn’t be happier. I still wear normal makeup and I’m not sure if I’ll stop that anytime soon, but for the skin care, I’m loving that it’s natural! I have also seen a huge difference in the way my face has cleared up as well, so I’m loving it!

Today I have a homemade face cream or oily skin recipe for you. It’s really fun to experiment with all these natural ingredients and see results, I’m loving it! One of these days I’m gonna do a post with my whole routine with a video so you can see how it’s done. But for now, the homemade face cream for oily skin!

The reason I think this cream is great for the day is because it’s lightweight and doesn’t feel oily. You’ll see when I tell you the ingredients why they’re great for a face cream for oily skin! Let’s get to it!

Homemade Face Cream for Oily Skin

Here is what you’ll need:

Now remember when I shared my whipped face lotion for sensitive skin? I mentioned that each oil that I include in making lotions has a comedogenic rating — 0 being won’t clog pores and 5 being highly likely to. The jojoba oil and the beeswax are a 2 rating and the hemp seed oils is 0. So you’re keeping the rating of this lotion nice and low which is perfect for a face cream for oily skin!

Now I love to explain why these ingredients are so good for our skin. It’s why I like to make lotion myself, because you can see all the awesomeness going into it!

Jojoba Oil – This is actually not an oil at all but more of a waxy substance that is very similar to our skin’s natural oil called sebum. Because of this, it is said that this oil can ‘trick’ our skin into thinking it’s producing enough oil, which helps balance oil production. It has been know to help acne, psoriasis, sunburn and chapped skin. Perfect for oily skin!

Hemp Seed Oil – This oil is a dry oil and with a comedogenic rating of 0, it is very unlikey that it will clog your pores. It’s known for reducing the size of pores, blackheads, and acne. It also can prevent premature aging, and is effective in maintaining moisture balance.

Beeswax – I used this mainly as a way to thicken this cream, but it’s also great for your skin! It provides a film of protection against irritants while still allowing the skin to breathe. It’s also a comedogenic rating of 2 so that’s still pretty low. It locks moisture in and has a lot of healing benefits as well because of it’s anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral benefits.

Aloe Vera Gel - Aside from feeling great on a sunburn, aloe vera gel can be great for treating acne, reduce inflamation in the skin, and help your skin heal quickly and naturally. It’s also great for reducing wrinkles with it’s plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E. (source)

Essential oils -  As I mentioned Tea TreeRosemaryLavenderFennel and citrus oils are great for oily skin. I would start with what you have and blend them to create what you want. I suggest about 5 drops each of 3 or 4 oils. I would encourage you to play around with the oils you like to create a smell you like as well!

homemade day cream

Now for the instructions. It’s also very easy. Here you go:

  • With a double broiler, heat the jojoba, hemp, rosehip seed, and beeswax together until combined.
  • Remove from heat and let it cool a bit.
  • After you can see it’s started to cool and solidify, with a hand mixer, start whipping it up. While whipping, add the aloe vera gel, and essential oils.
  • Once it’s all whipped up, you should have a lovely face cream!

See, so simple! Not as simple as last week, but still not too involved.

What do you think, is this an homemade face cream for oily skin you’d like to try? I am having a ton of fun making (and using!) these!! I am loving the results too – that’s always motivating!

Have a great day!

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen the challenge going on! I’ve never done/hosted an Instagram challenge and I am quickly finding out that they are so much fun!! I am currently in Africa on a little vacation, but I thought I’d pop in and share a quick outfit I wore towards the beginning of the week and share my 7 pieces for the remix challenge.

Here are the pieces I chose:

7x7 remix

It seems like a rather boring ensemble right off the bat, but you have to make all pieces work together. Since I was spending half the week where temperatures are in the 40’s and the other half with temps in the high 70’s, I wanted to make it a tad easier on myself. I feel like these pieces are pretty versatile.

Here is my first outfit.

7x7 remix day 1

The sun has been shining, despite the 40 degree weather and honestly, I’ll take it. No rain, not below freezing (often), and sun. Sounds beautiful to me! However, in Marrakech it will be in the mid to high 70’s which for Californians might still be a tad chilly, but coming from France it will feel fabulous. I’ll take it!

I figured I’d do most of the layering when I was in France because I knew it would be colder here and spend the second half of the week having the pieces stand alone more. I layer the chambray under my knit sweater. And I was warm. #WIN.

day 1 7x7 remix

Scarves are a fabulous way to change up an outfit while still sticking to your 7 pieces. I did this day 2 as well and it looked like I had chosen a whole new piece! It did feel like cheating a little since the scarf is HUGE.

My cuff is from Bratislava but if you’re interested in something similar, I know that Nickel & Suede have some AMAZING leather pieces. This is my favorite. Their earrings are to DIE for. They’re so light you don’t even know they’re there. Mine were stolen when we were robbed, but I am fixin’ to get some new ones soon. I also know the owner of the shop, we were on Stitch Fix Vacay together and she’s pretty awesome.

day one outfit 7x7 remix

If you’ve already joined the 7×7 Remix via Instagram, awesome!! So glad you’re joining the fun! If you’d still like to, come on over! You can check out more info here. It’s a really great way to take a different look at your wardrobe and challenge yourself to make the most of what you have. You don’t always need more to feel pretty!

Hope you have a fabulous day!

I worked with ULTA and P&G to create this smokey eye tutorial, but as always, all thoughts, opinions and photos are my own!

One of the most intimidating makeup looks to try has got to be the smokey eye. If you have never done it before or don’t really do makeup, it can seem daunting! It’s really not as hard as you think. And award season is here and we just rocked out at the Grammy’s, I partnered with COVERGIRL, P&G and ULTA to do a fun tutorial for this look! But of course, in true Ma Nouvelle Mode style – a tutorial you can do yourself at home with good products that don’t cost an arm and a leg. You’re welcome.

Simple Smokey Eye Tutorial

One of my favorite looks is the Rock look. I mean, who doesn’t love a smokey, dark eye? The thing is, for every day life, or even a hot night out, the typical ‘rock’ look might be a little too much. So I’ve created a tutorial for you that creates the rock look you saw at the Grammy’s all the while making it something you can ‘rock’ any time!

The best part about this look, also what makes it easy, is the eye shadow palette. The shadows in this baby are superb. I mean, just a tiny touch on your brush and you’ve got enough for the look. It’s really high intensity, it goes on smooth, and lasts all day. Love it.

Here is what you’ll need:

smokey eye tutorial - what you'll need

  • Eye liner & Brow pencil: These Bombshell Pow-Der BROW + Liner are amazing!! I haven’t always been a fill in the eye brow kinda gal until lately and it makes a huge difference! Specially with a smokey eye since it’s the main focal point for the look. The liner goes on smooth, but is great for beginners because it doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s more of a soft, smokey eye which is what we’re going for!
  • Full Lash Bloom Mascara: What I love about this mascara is that it really separates the lashes while you’re applying it. I don’t like the clumpy mascara look so this is perfect!
  • Outlast Lip Color: Going for a night out? You need your lipstick to last all day, don’t you? This stuff is incredible. Don’t apply it if you don’t want to wear it all day. It really, really lasts. I chose a very light neutral pink since we were doing the smokey eye so that it was a nice touch without being too much. And it really did last all day!
  • Eye shadow quad: The COVERGIRL quad makes this look so simple. All you really have to do is follow the instructions. No multiple palettes to search for the best colors or which shade goes with what. I also love the high intensity. I have used some high end products before that didn’t have the same intensity! That’s why I say that you don’t always have to spend more to get a good product.

You can find all four of these products at ULTA at the same great prices COVERGIRL is known for!

smokey eye tut

Before I start explaining, I thought I’d share a close up picture of the palette and the colors I used wear. I thought that’d be easier than me just referring to a color. So when I say “light color onto the lid” you know which one in the palette I’m referring to. I hope that makes sense!

simple smokey eye tutorial

Here is how you create this simple smokey eye:

  • Start with the lightest color all over the lid as a base
  • With a crease brush, get the darkest color and create a small “V” in the very outer corners. Avoid bringing this in too far, keep the dark colors on the outside.
  • With a curved brush, take some of the light brown and apply to above the dark color you just added onto your brow bone. You can bring this color from the outside brown bone to about 3/4 quarters of the way in. Keep it lighter towards the inside.
  • With a curved brush again, grab the darker shimmer color and apply this directly into the crease. Keep this color mainly towards the outer corner but you can bring it a littler farther inside, maybe half way.
  • With a regular flat brush and the same light color you started with apply it to the inside of the eye, blending out with the others and all the way up to under your eye brows. This brightens up the inside of your eye and doesn’t make the smokey eye too dark.
  • Apply the POW-Der eye liner along the last line on top and about a third of the way in on the bottom.
  • You can use the same POW-Der liner, or a lighter version, depending on your skin tone and hair color, and fill in your eye brows.
  • Apply two coats of the Full Bloom mascara to complete your look!

simple smokey eye

To finish off this smokey eye look, add the Outlast Lip color. It’s long-lasting and still doesn’t feel dry so you truly can wear it all day! I chose a light shade of pink because I wanted the smokey eye to steal the show.

I know you want to give this tutorial a shot, no worries, I’ve gotcha covered! You will be entered to win one of each of these items I used today (possibly not the same colors, but the same products) plus a $50 gift card to ULTA to grab a little bit extra. All you’ve got to do is leave a comment below telling me

What look would you rock if you were going to the Grammy’s!

Oh and right now if you head over to ULTA and buy a COVERGIRL product, you will get 50% off any other COVERGIRL products as well! So I can totally understand if you can’t wait to see who won the giveaway. :)

Good luck!

This post was sponsored by ULTA and P&G but all photos, thoughts and opinions are, as always, my own!
