I don’t know about you guys but the season change between summer and fall is the hardest. For one we all want it to cool down. Summer is fun and all but there’s nothing worse than a heat wave in September the same week the PSL comes out. No thanks! Often times the weather will play a sort of game with us, hot one week and cool the next. It’s tough! Not to mention that I’m in Southern California so the heat is even more intense. I’m talking a week full over thermostats of 100 degrees! Throughout all the weather switch up, dry heat & changes there are some things we can be doing to take care of our skin in the meantime. This way we can stay away from cracked hands dry skin.
Keeping your Skin Healthy Between Seasons
Stay away from hot water
I think I’ve said this time and time again, but I’m usually referring to hair when I do – but hot water isn’t the best option. I know it feels great (when it’s cool out at least!) but it sucks the moisture right out of your skin and leaves you feeling dry. Yes, you can apply moisturizer afterwards, but why not give your body a head start? I feel ya, cold water is just not gonna happen, so try showering in at least luke-warm or cool water. Finish by moisturizing when you’re out of the shower & you’re one step closer to keeping your skin healthy during the season change!
Don’t use soap
Say whaaaat? I know, you probably think I’m crazy right about now, but hear me out. Fragrant soapy scrubs might feel (and smell) great, especially after a long day at the beach, but the detergents, chemicals & fragrance leave your skin dry. I have been using Cetaphil® Gentle Cleansing Bar and I love it. I love the way it lathers up and how I feel super clean after a sweaty work out. It is a mild formula that is gentle, non-soap, and non-comedogenic. It doesn’t have fragrance and is hypoallergenic. You feel squeaky clean & your skin thanks you for it! I have just been using it on my body in the shower, but it says that you can also use it on your face. Which is great if you’re in a rush or forgot your face soap – just lather it all over!
Use a Humidifier
The dry weather can leave our skin thirsty for moisture and throughout the day it’s hard to deliver! However, you can help rejuvenate your skin throughout the night by adding a humidifier in your room. This has multiple benefits – cleaner air, moisture for your hair and skin, and easier breathing to name a few. This coupled with the other tips on the list can give your skin the healthy glow you’re looking for!
I don’t know about you, but oh my gosh, my feet right now need a pumice stone. In the movie “What a Girl Wants” (a cheesy Amanda Bines movie – don’t judge, Mr. Darcy is in it) she says something to the affects that with sand and a steady hand a girl would never need a pedicure. I strongly disagree! I was at the beach all weekend and my feet still need more than “sand and a steady hand” if you know what I mean! So whether it’s your feet, elbows, knees, anywhere that has a tendency to get a little hard & cracked – exfoliate. Then make sure you lather on lotion afterwards so it will be soft as a babies bum!
Switch to a Cream
It’s funny because before marrying my black husband, I didn’t think much about lotion and making sure you were moisturized. I did it when I felt dry and that was it. Well, it’s actually a big deal for my husband and our kids and I have since learned that when they go without moisturizer you can actually see it. It’s called ashy. So I have gotten in the habit of making sure that they are lathered up each day and I have been using Cetaphil® Moisturizing Lotion. I love it because it’s not greasy (who wants that in a lotion?), it’s non comedogenic so it won’t clog pores and non irritating. Although the lotion is great for all skin types (my husband and youngest son have pretty normal skin) it works just as well for me and my older son who happen to have more sensitive skin. My older son has been known to break out in little itchy bumps when I start using something new and he has yet to do that with Cetaphil®! Yay!
I have written about how important it is to go to bed “naked” (bare skin – washed face & no makeup), but I’ll say it again – sleep naked! Make sure you take it all off at night. Even if you don’t wear a lot or any makeup at all, there is still all that dirt and grime that can get stuck in the creases and make you age faster. And nobody wants any part of that! For me the issue is that sometimes I just get too tired to wash my face before bed. Having some facial wipes come in handy for those nights! The Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleansing Cloths are perfect. We went camping up at the beach a couple weekends ago I didn’t want to bring a big face wash system so instead I just brought these wipes. I was able to rinse off the salt water & grime of the day which definitely helped me sleep better. Throw them in your gym bag or carry on so that you’re never caught without a way to wash your face. Your older self with thank you for it later! So what do you think? Any other tips you would have for keeping your skin healthy between seasons? I’ve been doing most of these and I must say, my skin feels great! Leave your thoughts in the comments!
