Every summer when I was a kid my dad would pack up his truck, wake us all up at 4:00am to get on the road and travel up to Yosemite. As excited as we were for this trip, we still pretend to be asleep so he’d have to carry us out to the car. We’d sleep until breakfast in Fresno and be on our way up to the mountains.
My dad spent his childhood doing the same thing, so it’s only natural that I grew up doing it and now it’s my kids turn! Ever since they were little guys we have done the same thing. There is only one slight problem — my husband hates camping.
Now, he’s come a long way. He’ll go and enjoy himself but he always says, he came from a relatively poor upbringing where they had to do things like tote their own water to the house. They didn’t have electricity or running water. His family no longer has to go through all that, but he always says to me “We’ve all worked hard to come out of that, why in the world would I want to go back there? And for vacation? No thanks.”
I understand where he’s coming from and I try to be sensitive to it, but this is my favorite family vacation.
One week without cell phones, tv, internet, wii games etc. Not once during the week did my kids ask me to turn on some sort of electronic. They spent their days skipping rocks by the river, swimming, riding bikes or ‘fighting’ the bad guys. They must have used every ounce of their imagination they had and it was fabulous. And as much as I wanted to update my Instagram, the internet wasn’t great and it just wasn’t going to happen. So I put my phone away and that is why I love this vacation!
Unfortunately my husband couldn’t come at all this year. He’s in school and can’t miss any classes. I’m sure he was only kinda sad to miss it but happy to not have to rough it. Although I grew up tent camping and now we sleep in a camper, so they’re really not roughing it.
I just wanted to share a little bit of our camping adventure with you! If you ever have a chance to head up to Yosemite, do it. It’s fabulous. We stay at the Wawona camp grounds which is away from the tourists of Yosemite Valley. Experiencing God’s amazing creation up close and personal like that, there’s nothing like it!
