You might have read a little earlier that I tried the ‘no-poo’ method for my hair. It didn’t work. I am still nursing my hair back to health! The other day I shared 4 ways to make your hair look healthier right away and one of those ways was a DIY hair mask. Of course you can buy your own, but you can also probably do it yourself in no time with items you already have! So today I wanted to share my recipe for a DIY hair mask.
I use the term recipe lightly because, well, you’ll see.
Simple two ingredient hair mask
Yep, you saw that right, two ingredients. And you probably already have at least one of them. Coconut oil and Argan Oil. Since I went to Morocco back in February I have been hearing about all the benefits for skin, nails and hair that Argan oil has. I had bought some while I was there so I thought I needed to test it out.
For this hair mask grab your coconut oil and you can purchase Argan Oil from amazon. It can be expensive, but if you like making your own beauty products, it’s good to have on hand. You can sub it for this cream and it’s also non-comedogenic so it won’t clog your pores.
Here’s how it’s done:
Now, I don’t have a stitch of makeup on in these photos, mainly why I’m semi-hiding behind my hair. All you do is add some coconut oil into a small mixing bowl and mix it around with a fork or spoon until it’s softer. Then drizzle in the Argan oil until it’s the consistency you want. Then, one section at a time, apply the mixture to your hair. I start at the top front section and work back then move to the sides. Once you’ve saturated your hair, put it in a braid on top of your head. This is just so that it is contained a little. You can then leave it on over night, which is what I did the first time around, or just an hours or so. Then wash it out with shampoo and conditioner like regular. Either way, you will see results!
Here are the results after I did the at home hair mask the first time around.
It’s hard to take a picture that does it justice, my hair was so soft!
A few tips for doing this hair mask
- If you have really dry hair you can apply all the way to the roots.
- If you have naturally thin, fine hair, apply it just to the ends.
- The longer you leave on the mask, the better results you will see!
- You can use the Argan oil and coconut oil together or each individually, whatever you’ve got on hand!
- Once a month for fine-haired gals, twice a month of normal texture, and as often as once a week for dry, damaged hair.
- Also fantastic for girls with curly hair!
- You can also substitute Shea Butter for coconut oil.
That’s it! Hope you have fun with it!
I tried this last night with jojoba instead of argan oil. It’s like I have new hair! I slept with a shower cap because my dog apparently really, really likes coconut oil! Thank you so much for sharing. Bonus that it smells so good . Warning it does make your shower very slick! I
Just sprayed cleaner on it and it washed right off though. I’m new to your blog and am really enjoying it.
That’s hilarious about your dog!! But so glad to know that you liked it. The substitution of jojoba oil is perfect as I think argan is more expensive. And yes to making the shower slick!! You’ve almost got to clean it right then and there!
Great tip. I’ve always wonder if I can combine the the 2 (coconut oil and argan oil). I’ve always love using coconut oil and just recently I’ve tried argan oil, both works great. Thank you for sharing, i’ll combine the 2 for better result.
Yep, I think you can! The recipes are easy to adjust using the oils you want.
Hi Natalia. I lost all my hair during chemo in 2015. As soon as my hair started to grow back in early 2016, my wife asked if I’d grow my hair out long as a symbol of being reborn after what I went through. Always the willing husband, I have been growing my hair out now for 12 months. Looking for ways to soften, detangle and make my hair look nice overall, I came across your post. After following your recommendations, I can see a difference in my hair! It feels so soft, it’s no longer a tangled mess and my wife cannot stop running her hands through it. Thank you.
I love this!
