21 Ways to Upgrade your Mom Ponytail

It’s about time we talk about how to freshen up our ponytails. Ladies, I completely understand, ponytails are absolutely inevitable. As much as we try to fight our mom funk with cute hairstyles and quick but effective makeup routines, sometimes, it just happens. I have shared before 10 cute ways to wear ponytails and those styles still stand! But I have since added quite a few ponytail tutorials to this site & the other day I snapped a bunch, so I thought I’d do a big cute ponytail roundup for you!

21 simple but cute ponytail styles

21 cute ponytail styles

Let’s get right to it! Braids are the way to go ladies. They can help hide dirty hair, they look super cute, and they’re practical! I added a dutch braid to this ponytail then “pancaked” it, which just means pulling it out so it isn’t so tight and it looks more relaxed. Then I tied it all together in a ponytail and BAM! You’ve got a cute ponytail style!

easy twisted ponytail

I shared this one a little bit ago and loved it! It is so simple and at the base of it all is a ponytail. You just make a ponytail and then take three twists and pin them above the ponytail. Done! If you need more direction, you can check out the YouTube video that goes with this twisted, cute ponytail style!

sexy after gym ponytail

I included this style in my post “3 hairstyles that are great after the gym.” I had to include it here because basically a simple hair accessory can really take your ponytail from ‘mom ponytail’ to ‘cute ponytail!’ Gotta love the simplicity of that!

twisted cute ponytail

I love styles that look so much harder than they actually are. This style you take a section in the back and tie it with a hair tie. Then loose it a little, twist it up so that your hair hides the ponytail holder and pin. Then pin the other sections around it. So simple, just such a cute ponytail!

3 braided pony

This one was originally included in my 10 ways to wear a ponytail post. It’s a French braid on top and on both sides. My braided bangs pictures was so popular, I thought this was a perfect variation for a cute ponytail. First you braid all the way back to where you’re going to have the ponytail, then before your tie it off, pull out the braid so it’s nice and full. Do this on top and all three sides and then secure with an elastic!

double braid into ponytail

This was included in my 24 ways to wear braids post but it’s obviously a great fit being a cute ponytail as well! You can do two regular French braids like I have here or even two dutch braids would look really pretty as well. Simple but cute!

ponytail flip

The topsy turvy ponytail. Ever wanted to have a really full voluminous ponytail? Here’s the trick! Create a hole in the middle and turn your hair up through it so it waterfalls over. It’s really such a simple way to upgrade your regular ponytail!

cute ponytail parted down the middle

I love the simplicity of this ponytail and the way it’s perky in the back. I parted it down the middle and let the bangs kinda hang out. However, in real life that would bug me to death. Another option is to loosely pin the bangs back and pull out a little bit from the sides. This way it’s still loose and tousled without bugging you all day and eventually ending up in a regular mom ponytail. yaknowwhaddamean?

pony tail and headband

Add a headband! Just like adding a hair accessory, it’s simple but effective. It’s also a great option for dirty hair! This peacock feather headband adds character and makes a regular ponytail a cute ponytail!

soft ponytail tutorial

I shared this one a little bit back with a picture tutorial. It is so easy you guys! Create a regular ponytail and leave out the front, The sweep one side over, wrap it around and pin, then sweep another side over and wrap it around and pin. Voila!

pompador ponytail

The poof ponytail! Tease the front of your hair all the way to the back but not the sides. Smooth it over and secure where you want it in the back. You’ll have a simple poofed & cute ponytail!
ways to wear headbands side pony

Use a headband. I know I said add a headband, but this one is different. I placed this headband over my hair and then twisted my hair into the headband to create this look. It’s super simple but effective! You can find the full hair tutorial here!

double pony tail  I’m sure you’ve seen the ponytail trick, haven’t you? Where you create a small ponytail with a different section of hair just under the regally ponytail. The key is to create them very close to each other so people can’t see that there are two. It really elongates the ponytail. So if you’re looking for longer hair in a flash, here ya go!

twisted side braided ponytail

This simple braided side ponytail is really easy. In fact, the tutorial is only 7 minutes long! The braid in the front is great to keep your hair out of your face and the twisted side ponytail is super cute!

Simple summer hairstyles dutch side braided ponytail

I don’t have an actual tutorial for this style, but it’s easy, I’m sure you guys can do it. It’s just a side ponytail with Dutch braid in the front (stop picking up hair just behind the ear but continue braiding all the way down), wrap the braid all the way around the ponytail and you’ve got such a cute ponytail!

boho chic pony 550

We love messy, don’t we? Yes. Yes we do. Anytime we can look messy and put together at the same time, I am all for it. This hairstyle above was taken for a photo shoot I did with my husband a few years ago. It was a lot of fun and the pictures by Brienne Michelle were fabulous. I loved the hair the artist did so I decided to recreate it! You can see my version of this cute ponytail here. And guess what, it’s easy. Imagine that. 🙂

vintage ponytail

This vintage style ponytail is so cute and simple. We’re always looking for that poof in the ponytail, right? Well, this vintage style has it. You can see the full tutorial for this vintage ponytail here.

poofy pontail If you don’t have time for anything else, I know you’ll have time for this one! All it takes is adding a few extra hair ties and poofing out the middle sections. I’m sure you can figure it out on your own, but here’s a full video tutorial if you would like!

deep side swept cute ponytail

In this style, I just created a very deep side part in the front and separated out that section from the rest. Then I created a ponytail with the rest. After I just swept back the front part of the hair, wrapped it around, and pinned it. Done!

fake fishtail ponytail

This looks like it might take time sitting there trying ti fishtail braid each individual section. Well, I’ve got good news. It’s not! All you do is do a topsy turvy twist on each section of ponytail. Great, isn’t it? Perfect to tame a crazy hair day!

double french braid cute ponytail

The same idea as the side swept ponytail I shared above, but adding the braids to the side. Two French braids or Dutch braids on the side with less hair and wrapped around the ponytail is the perfect way to upgrade this look! It adds a little sumpin’ sumpin’ without a lot of work. Perfection!

So what do you think? Are these 21 cute ponytails any you would wear? Have they give you inspiration to upgrade your current ponytail situation? It’s cool, we’ve all been there. Let’s step up our game!

A while back had tried the one with the braid where you twist the rest of the hair through it, and I couldn’t do it… I gave it a go again today, and it came out totally cute… Just like yours! I really enjoy your tutorials and find you easy to follow and so relatable. Thanks for helping this mama to doll up her ponytail!
