When it comes to home design, I need all the extra help I can get. We’ve moved around every year of our marriage in rented houses in France. I wasn’t about to spend my money on decorating a home only to leave it 8 months later. This last year I put a little effort into it and it’s amazing how much of a difference it made. I love my little French home now!
While in California I have a small space to maintain and somehow it still manages to get messy and unorganized. I must have a special talent for that or something. My husband is always getting on me to clean up my makeup/working table. The problem is that when I get new stuff, whether it be new product or hair tools or whatever, I just throw it on the desk. It was disastrous. So I went out to JCPenney to grab a few things to organize my space and make it cute and happy and fun to work!
Just so you know how bad it was, here’s the before. And yes, this is slightly (okay a lot) embarrassing!
See what I mean? It’s my desk/work area plus my makeup space plus my general dump area. So ya, it gets a little crowded. I headed to the JCPenney home section and got myself a cute tray, a vase, ombre mason jars, and a cute lamp. Here’s what I did.
Gosh, I’m so happy with how it turned out. This was just the thing I needed to get it all cleaned off and organized. Obviously you can see that there’s not the same amount on the desk as before. I started by removing everything from the table. If I didn’t use it nearly daily, it didn’t get a spot on my desk. Even my hair products got moved to the bottom shelf area. But the space for working and getting ready together feels just wonderful.
I bought these really cute ombre mason jars from JCPenney’s home section. They were a little bit smaller than regular mason jars, which I wanted. I filled them up 3/4 of the way with some coffee beans and stuck my makeup brushes, mascara and even some eye liner in there. The mini mason jar is for my tweezers and eye liners.
I love this tray. Not only is it adorable, but it’s the perfect size. It’s a mini-version I think, but that works perfectly for what I wanted. I just wanted to maintain everything I had and have it be cute. So my makeup palettes are lined up toward the back which makes them easy to grab, my Furlesse patches that I use every night (and are only available in the Sephoras that are in JCPenney) are right there, ready to go, and then foundation, concealer, etc. Oh and bobby pins, because seriously, can’t live without them!
I knew it would be all organized when I was done, but I wanted it to be pretty too. I mean, this is my work space as well and I want it to be a happy work space! So when I saw this pretty, unique vase, I knew I wanted it. I’ve always been one to like things that are a bit different and this fit the bill for me! The flowers are from the garden – so pretty! I also couldn’t pass up the bird lamp, I must have something for owls.
I am sitting here right now at my nice, clean desk typing this post and I’m in love. It’s amazing how good it can feel to have things nice and organized! For those of you who are always organized, you might think I’m a little crazy. I mean, how could it be so hard? Somehow, for me, it is. But this is a start in a new direction for me, isn’t it?
Here are my tips for organizing your makeup/work station.
- Have a place for everything. So it’s easy to put things away in their place.
- Only have things out that you use almost every day.
- Jars, trays, and even small plates can double as holders!
- Minimize! It’s easy to keep adding to thing, but minimize what you need & use for a cleaner, more streamlined desk!
That’s the best advice I’ve got for creating an organized makeup/work place. You might be looking for a little more advice than that! Every Wednesday for the month of July, JCPenney has been welcoming a celebrity designer in-store and taking questions from fans via Facebook. The designer shares his/her advice and a few recommendations to help fans spruce up their place! Four weeks in 4 different cities with 4 different celebrity designers! I know I’m gonna add a few questions of my own for sure.
It is the end of July and we’ve only got one more Wednesday but no worries, all the videos can be viewed on JCPenney’s YouTube channel here. The last Designer Day is this Wednesday 7/30 with designer David Bromstad – submit your question on JCPenney’s Facebook page!
