Basic Eyeshadow Tutorial

You will never hear me saying I am an expert makeup artist. Or even an expert on hair. I am just your average gal who happens to be interested in those things! So if you came to this site looking for an intricate eye makeup tutorial, I am not your gal. I blog to inspire the everyday woman to take some time to herself and feel good about herself whether that be through makeup, hair, fashion, etc. So today I wanted to go back to basics and show you a very basic eyeshadow tutorial.

I know that makeup can be intimidating to some people. It looks great on others, just not on me! Does that sound familiar? Well, I want to encourage you to give it a try. It’s a lot easier than you think and I guarantee it, you can rock it too!

I chose very neutral colors so that they’ll look great on everyone. But the beauty of this tutorial is that you can easily switch out any of the colors for different shades or variations and you’ve got a new look! Start here, master this one, and then start branching out!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Neutral palette. The one shown here is Smashbox Full Exposure Palette. I got it in my goodie bag during my JC Penney trip. LOVE it. However, you can grab a neutral palette at your local drug store if you are just giving it a try.
  • Brushes: The brush that comes in the Smashbox palette works for the whole look, but if you don’t have a palette, you’ll need a big flat brush, a curved edge brush, and a small regular brush.
  • Primer: This is optional as I don’t wear it everyday. But it does help the makeup stop from creasing. I love my Smashbox Photo Finish primer I got as a sample a while back.

I know this might sound like an ad for Smashbox, but I promise, it’s not! I love their products and they all happened to be what I used for this tutorial, totally not on purpose.

So as you can see, the makeup is light, fresh, and not too much. Anyone can do it. This tutorial just covers the eye shadow and I will be making another one for eye liner soon so you can complete your look.

Smashbox eye shadows are my favorites! I’ve been using them for years. The pigments and texture are just right. I love using their shadows as eye liners too!

Glad you liked it! Ya, the primer should help to be a base for the shadow so it won’t crease. Good luck! 🙂
