Summer Life Hack: Create a ‘Busy Station’ for your Kids

I love summer. It’s such a fun, beautiful time. No school, no real schedules, just parks, beaches, bike rides and swim days. Lots of tired kids from fun activities with messy Popsicle faces make me happy. It’s pretty much my goal every summer day to get them as tired as I possibly can. However, there are some hard things that come with all the fun ones. For example, life doesn’t just stop when summer comes around. Mom and Dad still have jobs, obligations, and chores still need to be done. The world doesn’t stop so we can entertain our kids for 3 months, as much as they would like that.

It’s been a battle each summer for me to create ways my kids can entertain themselves without plopping them in front of the TV every chance I get. (Confession: I kinda hate the tv…) This summer I’ve got a life hack to share with you. A simple way to create a place for your kids to play freely without creating a huge mess. When things are organized and put together with suggested activities available, my kids tend to play longer.

My life hack? Putting together a ‘busy station’ for my kids for the summer using some unsuspected items! JCPenney has some amazing choices, both online and at your local store and it was so fun to do the shopping there! I was definitely able to get some steals.

Summer Life Hack: Creating a ‘Busy’ Station for your kids

How to create a summer busy station

As you can see, it was pretty simple! Most of the toys, paints, puzzles, & drawing items we already had. It was about getting a few things to pull them all together so that my kids could 1) play easily with them and 2) take them out and clean up after themselves by themselves. (We’ll see how that second part goes…) Here’s what I bought from JCPenney:

items needed to create busy station for kids

JCPenney is having a great Memorial Day sale too – you should head over there. Because I know you’ll love their prices! I bought the cupcake holder here ($39), Good Grip Clips here ($7), shower curtain hooks here ($7), and the hanging 3-shelf organizer here (only $16!). As you can see, these are from different departments with different functions. But doesn’t that make it fun? Sometimes the best use for something is definitely not something it was intended for!

Kids Play Station

cupcake holder for kids toys

First we have the cupcake holder. Here we’ve transformed it into an organization tool for our creative ‘busy’ station. On the top we’ve got colors, stickers, stencils, coloring books and on the bottom we’ve got items for painting. The top is perfect for holding all of the papers, etc., because it’s flat and the perfect size. The bottom is perfect for the paint because you can dab a bit in each cupcake spot for the kids to use!

creative ideas for kids

This way you don’t have to worry about the paint getting everywhere, instead you have each one contained in their little section! Now granted, I’m gonna keep it real – this picture was taken for this post. This is most definitely not what it would look like if my kids were painting. It contains the paint more than a paper plate, but kids will be kids! Another side note – my kids are 7 and 4. They can paint without me worrying about them also repainting the walls as well. If you don’t feel comfortable using it for paint with your kids, I feel ya. You could use the cupcake holder for kids to separate buttons or Legos into colors or shapes. Or if you could find some old Boggle letters and have them separate their letters. That way it’s educational too! I’m sure it’d be great for quite a few activities.

Hang your kids’ art

hang your kids art

Now here’s where the clips and hooks come in. They are absolutely perfect for hanging your kids’ art! Also, the reason I chose this 3-shelf closet organizer to hang. It has space to organize your kids’ art stuff and toys but there is a slot through the bottom to hang a pole. Slide one through there, add some hooks & clips and BAM your kids can display their art! You want to know the best part? This play station hangs in the closet, so even if they didn’t pick up after themselves (shocker!!) you can just slide the closet door shut. Problem solved. You also won’t have a million paintings, even if they are the most beautiful your child has ever painted, hanging on the fridge. Because if you’re like me, there’s only so many I can keep!

There you have it! My best #LifeHack for the kids to get through the summer! JCPenney wants to know your summer ‘life hack!’

My best lifehack tip is to prep snacks a day ahead. That way, when kids are anxious to eat, you can just pop out the premade and go on with your day!

I only give my kids popsicles when they are at the pool. Otherwise I deal with a sticky mess all day long 🙂

my latest lifehack would be using pinterest as my search engine! 🙂 type in what i am searching and all my answers pop up little nice little images. no more clicking on all those search engine results to then see if it was what i was looking for. saves so much time! 🙂

Thanks for the chance to win. My best life hack is to freeze leftover things in ice cube trays so they’re easy to thaw. When my kids want spaghetti for lunch or a little marinara for dipping, I can quickly thaw a cube or two of leftover spaghetti sauce without opening a new jar or trying to thaw a huge chunk poured in a freezer bag. The same works for leftover coffee. It’s easy to throw in the blender for homemade frappes!

Love the idea of a kid station. I have something similar, an old bookcase in my dining room. We keep games and art supplies there.

  11. Yvette May 20, 2014 at 11:38 am #

I keep a beach bag packed with towels, sunscreen, goggles, and magazines ready to go all summer. That way, if we get invited to the pool or decide to go to the beach or water park, we are halfway ready to go. I usually I keep beach chairs and beach umbrellas in the trunk of my car in the summer, as well.

This is so inspiring! I want to create a space like this to that art supplies are at my daughter’s fingertips! Thank you!

My life hack is payinf my son ten cents per pair of socks to match them together from a large basket of socks for five people

  15. MaryEllen May 20, 2014 at 12:34 pm #

I’d say my best life hack is the same as Sarah’s – using ice cube trays to freeze sauces, etc. You could also freeze buttermilk in the trays and take out a few cubes to make salad dressing. I don’t use the whole carton all the time and waste it. This way, there is no waste and I can make salad dressing as I please and not feel pressured to make a huge amount and use it.
I also use a small cart in the closet for socks and underwear so dressing in the morning is truly a one-stop shop. Bras are up on hangers. No walking back-and-forth to a dresser.

  16. jessica robertson May 20, 2014 at 12:36 pm #

My latest life hack is playdoh outside on the deck. That stuff is messy, but my kids love it!

  17. jenna May 20, 2014 at 12:42 pm #

These are great ideas!! My life, hmmmm meal planning put my dinners and putting them, a week at a time, on a framed board in the kitchen…now just before I head to bed I take out tomorrow’s dinner to defrost…and no thinking about it at 4pm when everyone is hunger and rushing out the door 🙂

  18. Megan Borah-Pribble May 20, 2014 at 12:59 pm #

My #lifehack is to cook frees able items in double batches so in those busy nights when the kids play sports and we get home late, dinner just has to be popped in the oven and we’re eating,

  19. Amber Nivison May 20, 2014 at 2:58 pm #

With five kids sharing one bathroom I needed an easy way to keep all those towels off the floor. My #lifehack is using a coat rack as a towel holder in the kids bathroom…each hook is labeled with their initial and it doesn’t take up anymore wall space than the towel rack did.

  21. Natalie May 20, 2014 at 4:32 pm #

My favorite #lifehack is preparing meals for the week, including work lunches on Sunday and then putting them in the freezer/fridge. It saves so much time! Also, I clean the shower during and right after I take a hot shower. It loosens up the dirt and makes it easier to clean.

A favorite #LifeHack of mine is making a lot of extra food for left overs. On busy nights left overs serve as quick and easy meal without the need to spend unnecessary money on take out. I like left overs, especially when nobody else is going to be home because it is not a lot of fun going through the hassle to cook dinner for one sometimes. WIth left overs, anyone can grab a dish out of the fridge and reheat their food in the microwave or the oven.

My kids and I do “mini-missions” where we play the mission impossible theme song and clean some part of the house together in the morning before we leave for work/school. It only take 3 min, but we can get something done with all of us working on it and it helps keep things from falling completely out of control during the work week. Longer “Missions” might take 3 or 4 or more playings of the song for bigger projects on days we’re home. We don’t call it cleaning, it’s a mission that must be accomplished and that makes it much more tolerable to them. 🙂
