So this summer heat… um ya, it stinks. I don’t want to be the one always complaining that the weather isn’t just perfect, so I’ll stop right there. Instead, I’m going to make lemonade out of lemons & show you some cute DIY cut-off shorts I made!
I had a bunch of old jeans left over from pre-pregnancy days, or just old days, who knows when, and since I like a good refashion, I have trouble throwing out old clothes. I knew I wanted to make some shorts, so one day I picked up my scissors and just had at it.
If you know me at all, you know my sewing style is a bit crazy. It drives my mother nuts. I don’t measure anything. I have a vague plan before I start but it almost always turns out different. I just have fun with it. That’s why I like to use old clothes because if I ruin it, no biggie. I saw that I had quite a few pairs of jeans, so I thought it would be fun to share more than one way to DIY cut off shorts!
Yes, I know, that’s quite a few crotch shots, but I really wanted you to see the shorts & I didn’t know how else to do it. I apologize in advance. Moving on…
Regular cut offs
I had a pair of black skinnies that I didn’t wear anymore & I needed black shorts. BAM – I get what I need and I spent absolutely no money. I like it! I left these cut off & just did a loose stitch all the way around to make sure it doesn’t fray too high.
These pants were long, loose pants with a thick cuff at the bottom. Since I was trying to come up with 4 different ways, I thought it would be cool to just replicate what the pants already where. I cut them off, folded them under where I wanted it, ironed them straight & then sewed them up!
I love these. They’re so comfy too. I cut these ones a little longer because I wanted them long & I wanted to cuff them. I did a thin cuff & then hemmed all the way around to have the cuff stay put. In hindsight, I wish I would have gone a little longer on these ones. I might have to see if I have another pair I can cut up.
Lace Hemmed Shorts
These are my next favorites. Isn’t the lace pretty? It’s kind of hippie-ish, but I like it. I saw a picture on Pinterest where the lace was sewn on the inside of the shorts, but I just liked this look better. And I did try it the other way. All I did was pin the lace down and hem it all the way around. I also cut up a bit on the side for a little added character.
There you have it! I’m definitely bringing these bad boys to The Bahamas next week where it will be hot and humid. I am going to do my best not to complain because my husband thinks I’m a baby. And he just might be right…
