Simple Tips to Wearing Lipstick

It’s no secret that I like me some lip color. The more colorful and bright, the better. I think it adds so much pizzazz to any outfit or look. Here’s the problem. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard someone say, “That’s a beautiful color, but I could never pull it off,” or, “That looks great on you, but it wouldn’t look great on me.” Well ladies, I am here to say that it is NOT TRUE!! Phew, okay, settle down, Natalia. Sorry for shouting, it’s just that it’s really not true. It’s not true that only a certain type of woman can pull off certain lipstick colors. It’s not true that you have to be a makeup lover to wear a bright color. And really, it’s not true that you have to know what you’re doing before you buy that first color. So today I wanted to share a few pointers and hopefully you will leave feeling empowered and wanting to go buy a bold lip color. Because trust me, you can pull it off, and you will look fabulous!

Start Slow

It’s intimidating, I know. Trust me, I was there a little while ago. I just randomly bought my first red lipstick almost two years ago now. But here’re a few suggestions.

  • Start with a lipstick that feels glossy, like you’re wearing chapstick, so you won’t feel self-conscious about yourself all day. You may even forget it’s there! Revlon Super Lustrousโ„ข Lipstick is absolutely amazing.
  • Start by wearing a color you feel comfortable with. So if red is super intimidating to you, try a pink or a coral. Both are very pretty options and once you see how fabulous they look, you’ll be ready for the red in no time.

pink and coral

  • Start by wearing the color around the house. Maybe on housework day or something. That way you’ll be able to get yourself used to how it feels and how it looks in the comfort of your own home. Perfection.

Start Inexpensive

There is absolutely no need to go out there and spend $25+ on lipstick. And I own a few like that. But you know what? The colors that I come back to again and again are the colors I picked up at your local convenience store. So when Revlon sent me some of their beautiful shades, girl let me tell you, I was excited. And if you follow me on Instagram, then you saw it. Revlon Lip Colors

Fuchsia Shock Lipstick & Pink Pop Lip Gloss

Start comfortable

There are lip colors out there that are matte or long stay or just really dry & hard to wear. You have to make sure you prep & wear it with lip gloss and check throughout the day to make sure it’s not flaking off. So if you’re unsure, start with colors that go on soft and feel silky smooth. Revlon lipsticks have LiquiSilkโ„ข formula, which seals in color and softness. Best of both worlds, really.

Start Simple

If I still haven’t convinced you to get out there and purchase some lipstick, here’s my last point. Start with lip gloss! If you’re not used to wearing anything on your lips, this is a perfect way to start. It will get you used to having something on your lips, and prep you for when you’re ready to start wearing more color. Revlon Super Lustrousโ„ข Lipgloss is moisturizing, conditions lips with Vitamin E & avocado oil (which also prevents tackiness) and it’s a non-irritating formula. Then when you’re ready, you can move right into color! You obviously know that Revlon lipstick is a no-brainer for me. They sent me these 6 products

Lipsticks: Lover’s Coral, Rich Girl Red, & Fuchsia Shock

Lipglosses: Sugar Violet, Pango Peach, & Pink Pop.

But I have also purchased Revlon on my own and LOVE it. In fact, this beautiful orange (that is now my go-to color of the summer) is Revlon. close up

Are you inspired?! I sure hope so! I think every woman should have some color in her makeup bag. Lips are such an easy, fun way to do that. You can check out Revlon’s products here and their Facebook Page here. So now it’s your turn! My best kept beauty secret: don’t stress. Stress is so hard on skin and can prematurely age you. Hard for any makeup to look good, if your face looks stressed.

I like lipstick! I don’t like reapplying it much, but still, it really does brighten up my face. Early in the spring, I splurged and bought about 4 new lipsticks. I’m so glad I did!

I don’t know if I have a beauty secret. I’m loving BB cream. I like it so much better than foundation.

My best kept beauty secret is to drink a lot of organic carrot juice. The carotene actually can give your skin a little color (orangey, but just looks a little pinky)! I’m very pale and no matter how much I use blush, it comes off and then I look like a ghost! I love lipsticks, the best part is buying them! My fav are corals.

    • Natalia July 1, 2013 at 1:23 pm #

Great idea about the carrot juice! And corals are so pretty aren’t they?

  18. Pomereta June 29, 2013 at 2:10 pm #

Really like this post, I followed your advise and wore my red-orange lipstick today, made me feel so summery and sexy!! About beauty secrets…umm…they are not real secrets but exfoliating once a week and using hyaluronic acid solution on my face everyday gives me that bright and fresh look that I love.

    • Natalia July 1, 2013 at 1:22 pm #

I am so glad you liked the post & rocked the lipstick! I’m sure it looked beautiful on you!

  19. J June 29, 2013 at 4:22 pm #

My question is, if you’re using lip stick (not just lip gloss) are you supposed to use lip liner or any other beauty products with it? I never really got lip liner.

    • Natalia July 1, 2013 at 1:18 pm #

I don’t use lip liner if it’s a soft lipstick like these Revlon ones. I do use it when I have a dark or deep red, then I use a neutral lip liner so that the red doesn’t bleed. There are other uses for it, but I wouldn’t say you need it everyday or anything. Hope this helps!

My best kept beauty secret is staying hydrated. I have a natural glow, but if I don’t stay hydrated, I lose that glow, which makes it hard to put makeup on without looking weird.

I absolutely love lipstick! It’s hard to find the right color for me but once I do, I go crazy! I think my best-kept beauty secret is staying hydrated. When I’m hydrated enough, I have a natural glow. When I’m not, it’s hard to put makeup on without me looking weird. LOL

  26. HilLesha July 1, 2013 at 11:28 am #

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not good to wash your hair everyday since it strips the hair of its natural oils. Therefore, I don’t wash it everyday. I also tame the flyaways with organic coconut oil. ๐Ÿ™‚

Great advice on how to use lipstick as a confidence booster! I love how you can play with colors and mix different tones together to create a great look. My best kept beauty secret is probably that I take a cod liver oil supplement. It makes my skin look great even without make up..soft and glowy!

Do you have any suggestions on which kind of lip stain is best or how to prep your lips properly so it stays on? I’m worried about getting lipstick all over everything, but the lip stains I’ve bought don’t seem to stick as long as they claim to! TIA ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Natalia July 11, 2013 at 9:13 pm #

I don’t use a lip stain, so I’m not sure. I have found that the lipsticks that claim to stay all day usually dry out & you have to reapply at some point anyway. I just carry them with me for the day & reapply when needed. I like these because they feel like chapstick so soft & smooth.

Sorry I’m not much help! I’ve seen you can DIY a lipstain too – maybe Pinterest it? ๐Ÿ™‚
