Messy Top Knot for Short Hair

If you haven’t noticed, top knots are all the rage. Maybe cuz they’re cute and easy and it keeps your hair off your neck, but it’s not a ponytail. Maybe there’s lots of reasons, but either way, they make me happy. It’s a perfect second (or third or fourth) day hairstyle and you still look pulled together.

Now that’s what I’m talking about.

I had this top knot tutorial I did during last summer and the messy top knot become pretty popular on Pinterest and the video I made is my most viewed video on YouTube. The top of my head is pretty popular! Not sure if I should be honored or offended because my face doesn’t get pinned nearly as much… haha!

Anyway, now that I’ve chopped my hair off, I still want to be able to do the messy top knot. So I tried it and guess what? It’s still easy, it’s still cute & it gets short hair off your neck!

Mess TopKnot for Short hair

Here is what you need:

  • Root volumizing spray. I used this one but I’ve also used this oneand they both are fab. If you don’t have a root lifting spray of some sort, they are definitely a good investment! It really gives so much volume and makes your hair easier to style.
  • Hair tie
  • Maybe dry shampoo, depending on your hair. I didn’t use it in the video, but you’d use it before you make the ponytail. I heard this Victoria Secret one is fabulous, I am gonna try it soon.
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair Spray. You’ll probably want a stronger hold one like this Kenra 25.
  • Teaser comb. Here, here and here are my favorites.

That’s it!

messy top knot for short hair

This hairstyle is actually probably better on second day hair. My hair started curly, but if you don’t have yours curled, no worries. The video below shows/explains it all, but I’ll give you a run down for all you readers out there.

  • Give yourself a little height from the forehead back to where you will secure your ponytail. This will help it stay well.
  • Pull back your hair and have it kind of piece-y on top. So it’s not slicked back and not tight to your head.
  • Secure with ponytail.
  • If you’re hair isn’t curled at all, start by adding some curls to the ponytail. Nothing major or perfect, just some messy curls.
  • If you have some curl, just start pinning the curls down to your head. You can pin them however you want, but for the messy look, make them a little random.
  • The back of the ponytail will have fallen out with short hair. Twist up and secure with a bobby pin so you don’t have it hanging down.
  • Spray some stronghold hairspray.

You’re done!

messy top knot in short hair Wasn’t that easy? Now you’re all ready for spring/summer to roll around! If it’s still cold where you are, just add an ear warmer like I used here.

So what do you think? Are you now overly excited for the warmer weather to come? I know I am!

I never thought updo’s were as easy as they are until I began reading your blog. I never really wore my up before that (expect for back in the days of banana clips). So, thank you for teaching me.

Oh they are SO easy! I have another one coming soon that is an updo for short hair and it’s just a few easy steps. That’s my kind of hair!

Great post, Natalia! I wore my hair like this for yoga today. It definitely helps to have a little natural texture. The dry shampoo also helps a lot.

    • Natalia March 24, 2013 at 3:06 am #

Yes, it’s definitely hard to create the same types of looks without product. They make it so much easier!

I love this top knot style.  Randomly tried it today….where can I post it to?  What is the instagram hashtag??

    • Natalia March 24, 2013 at 3:04 am #

Oh I love that you tried it! My Instagram username is @natalialsimmons and you can hashtag #mnmhair if you want. Thanks for wanting to connect, I LOVE it!

This gives me hope. I have longer hair, but I wouldn’t mind shorter hair. The reason I keep it long is because i love how convenient my top knot hairdo is. Maybe this will help me make the big step to lop it all off =)

    • Natalia March 26, 2013 at 3:29 pm #

I think there are so many options either way you choose. I am enjoying the short hair now, but definitely miss the length at the same time!

  7. Raquel @ Organized Island March 25, 2013 at 11:13 am #

Oh that looks so pretty and you make it look so easy! Going to have to try this – I will be happy if it looks half as cute as your updo.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi, I love this idea. My hair is about your length and I could never get the height needed for the top knot. Thanks for the pointers. Your blog is fantastic. Following you via Google+

    Hi Natalia,

You have got really beautiful hair, that makes your personality charming!
How do you maintain your hair looks? what do you apply on your hair?

  15. Stephanie @ NewlyMynted March 19, 2014 at 5:51 am #

I’m going to be trying to the 7×7 remix, so I will probably be throwing this hairstyle in there too. I’ve grown mine out, but I really hate doing anything with it. It’s SO time-consuming. Yet I hate leaving it down, straight and boring. Sheesh! No wonder my honey says I’m a mess. LOL!

    Thanks for sharing love!

    • Natalia March 20, 2014 at 12:51 pm #

So glad to have you joining the 7×7!! It’ll be fun! Hairstyles are fun to try too. It’s hard to do your hair everyday though and be creative with it. I totally understand that! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  16. emberry April 5, 2014 at 3:55 pm #

Thank you for this great idea. I was trying to figure out how to volumize my thin wavy/curly hair into a bun WITHOUT having to tease it. This looks great, and so easy.

So glad you liked it! Thanks! Hope it works for you!

  17. Nancy Lord March 30, 2015 at 8:03 am #

Thank you SOOOO MUCH!!! I’m 58 and have medium-length layered hair and a plain ponytail is NOT a good look for me. I need to have updo’s in the summer – I live in Yorba Linda CA and the temps get into the 90’s – 100’s during the summer. Now I can wear a cute updo to church and not be a sweathog with my long hair, as well as work in my yard and not look like a goofball (even though I am a goofball 😉 )You have made this fantastic video and it’s so easy to do my hair now!!!! Thanks again from the bottom of my heart!!! <3 <3 <3 ~Nancy Robertson Drake Lord.

  18. Nancy Lord March 30, 2015 at 8:06 am #

Thanks so much!!! WOW – now I can put my hair up and look decent at 58 instead of having a plain ponytail and looking dorky! So cute and so easy – now I’m set for church and not sweating with long hair. I live in Yorba Linda CA and our summers get to the 90’s and 100’s so I’m so happy to have an updo that. is age appropriate! <3 <3 <3 Nancy Robertson Drake Lord

    • Natalia April 3, 2015 at 4:44 am #

So glad you liked it, thank you for letting me know! Yes, when we’re not in France we live in Simi Valley, CA and we get rather hot summers as well! SO I am all about top knots and braids 🙂

  19. Maren September 27, 2015 at 1:58 pm #

I was excited when it said short hair and your hair is far from short…..very disappointed!!!!!

  20. Maren September 27, 2015 at 1:59 pm #

Your hair is far from short!!!!

  21. Sarah March 30, 2016 at 10:46 am #

Yeah I think we have a very different definition on short hair.

    • Natalia May 23, 2016 at 10:06 am #

Maybe. This hair is short for me and it isn’t long. Also, if someone has a pixie cut or something shorter than what I have then obviously it’d be quite difficult to do a top knot. So you can take this post/video for what it is, an idea, or just don’t use it at all. Either is fine with me 🙂

  22. Lisa June 12, 2016 at 6:23 am #

Natalia, thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I’ve been struggling with how to do a messy bun without it looking, well, messy 🙂 I live in Canada (southern Ontario) most of the time, but most of my family lives in Nassau As you may know, the weather can get extremely hot and humid there, so when I am staying at our Nassau property, (on Eastern Rd.), my hair is *ALWAYS* up. Wearing my wavy/curly hair down is simply not an option when I’m in the Bahamas, or else I look like a frizzy mess! You have some wonderful tutorials/articles on your site and I just subscribed to your mailing list. Thanks again for sharing — I look forward to learning more from you!

    • Natalia June 24, 2016 at 3:43 pm #

I completely understand! We only visit Nassau and still I struggle with how to manage my hair! Specially because I am from dry, dry so Cal where we don’t have that problem. Glad this style could help you! And so fun to have the Bahamian connection!
