Amsterdam

Happy Saturday everyone!

I don’t usually write on the weekends, but I recently took a trip to Amsterdam and it was sooo pretty! If I keep waiting around, I’ll never post it, so here I am!

So my cousin came out to visit with her husband last week. It worked perfectly as it was on vaccances which is a 2 week vacation the French take every six weeks. Our town is small and there isn’t too much to it so I didn’t want them to feel like they were wasting their time here. We originally thought Belgium but couldn’t think of anything to do in Belgium.

I had been to Amsterdam when I was 15 on an athletic missions trip and I loved it. However, I was given the chance at that point to visit the Anne Frank House. I knew who she was but I didn’t understand the significance of seeing the house or why I should go. I opted out. I can’t even remember what I opted out for, but as the years passed and I had a chance to read her diary I knew I missed out.

And who knew if I’d have another chance someday? I knew I had to get back there at some point so when this opportunity arose, we jumped on it.

Up bright and early on a Wednesday during vacation, childless thanks to an amazing husband and off we went.

I was right, I needed to go back. I mean look:

amsterdam canals

I was mesmerized! What an amazing city, really! With canals everywhere, boats, & bikes. Everyone’s happy (or high, couldn’t tell) and it was really so pleasant. I don’t know if I am just mesmerized by European big cities or what, because Paris most certainly has my heart. Although after this trip, Amsterdam is a close second.

There’s just so much more character than cities in the US. Or on the west coast at least. I mean, these people have bikes and boats instead of cars. The apartments that lined the canals were just so cute I wanted to live there!

And I actually do live in a similar apartment above a store on a busy street. Somehow it was cuter there…

This is me and my cousin, Marissa. You might recognize her from this post. I work for her company during the summers, so fun! This is the second time she’s come to visit me and I LOVE it. I LOVE having visitors.
anne frank house amasterdam

This is the Anne Frank house. You guys, can I just say, this was amazing. You might know that I am a huge history nerd. Like when I went to the south of France and marveled at the medieval village. Or Versailles, I could gawk over that for a while. But this, this was seriously cool. You actually walk through where she and her family lived.

If you don’t know the story, during the oppression of Jewish people during WWII Anne Frank went into hiding in a secret annex in the back of the father’s workplace. They stayed there for over two years hiding from the Nazi’s until they were discovered. There were eight people hiding there and only the father survived the concentration camps.

All I know is if my kids were there, we’d have been found out immediately. I can’t imagine staying quiet like that for so long. It was amazing. If you’re ever close to Amsterdam, it’s a must-see for sure!

The rest of the day we just strolled around the city. And as you can see, it was beautiful! I mean so charming. I don’t remember being in love with the city like this the first time around. Then again, I was 15 so I probably didn’t have a clue. We stopped in a few shops, ate some dutch pancakes with ‘caramel sauce’ (which are just crepes with syrup) and just enjoyed our time. I like to get souvenirs in the form of clothes are lipsticks when I’m in other countries and I bought these fabulous pants, a shirt and this hat that I had to wear the rest of the day because it was freezing!

Cute though, right? It’s definitely come in handy. A warm head makes so much difference! We ended up getting home around 11 that night, it was a full and wonderful day.

I hope you enjoyed my pictures of Amsterdam! Who’s been? Any other suggestions as to what to see there? I am sure I will return this year and would love to have a little more purpose when I go!

    I love this post!

Now I want to go to Anne Frank’s house. I read The Diary of Anne Frank many times as a kid and also The Hiding Place. I would love to spend some time (a of time) in Europe.

The parts we went to were wonderful. We didn’t have my kids, but I would have felt fine with them there. I think there are parts of it that aren’t good, but we didn’t go there. There is of course a lot of weed and you can’t go into just any ‘coffee shop’ because it’s really just for drugs, but we just steered clear of that and were okay. You could smell weed as you walked and everything but my kids are too young to know what it is. Beautiful city over all, I loved it!

I’ve just discovered your blog and am so glad I did! All your trip pictures are so beautiful! We’re heading there for a visit next month and I cannot wait. Without knowing, we planned our trip to fall during their biggest holiday of the year (Queen’s Day) and the coronation of the next King so it’s going to be crazy busy! How lucky you are to live near so many amazing places!

Next time you are in Amsterdam try picking up a box of Droste cocoa powder. It is INCREDIBLE to say the least. We have family in Amsterdam and they bring us a couple of boxes when they visit and we gobble them down in no time. It makes wonderful hot cocoa (1 heaping tsp of cocoa, 2 tsp of sugar and warm milk). They might even have it where you live. Love your site!
