Okay so this little day is coming up. The one day where you are supposed to show that you love someone. We don’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day. My husband says “Why do I need one day to show you I love you? Its stupid.”
I think it’s a cop out.
Either way, it is celebrated & it can be fun. I wouldn’t put too much pressure on just one day, but it is fun to celebrate those you love! If you’re not married or don’t have a significant other, go out with friends! Or have an independent night out. If that sounds lame, trust me & just do it. Because when you’re married & have kids, you’ll wish you would have!
Even if we might not celebrate Valentine’s Day, I still thought it would be fun to share a bunch of date ideas you could do that don’t cost a ton of money. We are almost always on a budget and big fantastic date nights are usually out of the question. One day though… a girl can dream!
Until then, I have…
15 Cheap Date Ideas for Valentine’s Day
1.) Romantic dinner at home
We cook at home every night & if I’m not cooking it’s leftovers. We rarely eat out. But instead of a regular dinner, make it special! Add some red or hearts places. Set up the table with pretty colors. Even if your guy doesn’t act like he cares, it’s the effort that counts!
2.) Movie in the park
In college, me and the hubs used to do this all the time. Now granted, we were living in Southern California. That idea would not work for our current city! But if you have decent weather, grab some blankets, a thermos of your favorite hot drink, & your laptop & head to the park.
3.) Build a snowman together
This is for the other kind of weather. Go outside & play in the snow! Have a snowball fight, build a snowman, make a snow angel. Make the weather work for you!
4.) Put the kids in bed early & change into his t-shirt w/ nothing else. The rest of the night will take care of itself.
Need I say more? If you haven’t done this or something similar – do it. Probably the best present you could give your husband. Here’s another way to work this trick.
5.) Game night
Me and the hubs love playing games. Bust out your favorite board games & have a game night! This one is a particular favorite!
6.) Go for a walk
This one might not be on our list personally, my husband hates going outside for walks. (He is a professional basketball player & basically runs for a living, I’ll let it slide.) But it might be good to get outside, hold hands, walk & chat.
7.) Fancy coffee at home
There are plenty of fancy coffee making machines out there, but there are some homemade recipes to spice up your drink as well! A Beautiful Mess has some recipes for homemade coffee syrup and of course there is The Pioneer Woman’s iced coffee. Get creative with it!
8.) Take a drive
Explore the area around you! Go places you haven’t been! If you know your area well, go to an old favorite, where you first met/first date/first kiss if you can.
9.) Mini self photo shoot
I am thinking about doing this one myself. Set the camera up on a tripod and pose some fun pictures of you two just being in love. You’ll probably be thankful you have them later on!
-If he doesn’t want to do a regular photo shoot, suggest doing it with some lingerie… might catch his attention. #justsayin
10.) Breakfast in bed
You could go all out and make something super special and all Pinteresty or you could throw something in the crock pot the night before so it’s easy peezy in the morning. If you have kids, let them watch a movie or cartoons so you guys can chill in bed a little while longer.
11.) Fondue
You can have it as a meal with bread & cheese or oil & meats. Both amazing, trust me! (The French love their fondue!) Or better yet, have a chocolate/dessert fondue like this one here! Yummy!
12.) Have a slumber party movie night.
Curl up in sleeping bags and grab some popcorn and candy and have a movie marathon! If you have kids, put them to bed early or try to drop them off at the parents if you have that option.
13.) Have a Wii tournament.
That is, if you have a Wii. If not, that wouldn’t really be a cheap date night! Husband & I are competitive gamers. I guess because we’re both athletes, it’s in our blood, but this is fun for us!
14.) Favorites Night
Make a list of a bunch of your favorite things & try to do as many as possible. Favorite food, favorite place to go, favorite movie, favorite activity. Make sure you do a little bit of both of your favorites!
15.) Shut off electronics and just see what happens…
In this day & age we are glued to our smart phones, TVs, games, computers, tablets, you name it. Have a shut off time and after that time they’re not allowed to come on. Just talk, hang out, & enjoy each other like the good old days!
