Guide to Getting the Most out of Your Jewelry

I love jewelry…. I really do! The honest truth is, I just don’t own very much of it. Every now and then I look at my collection and think,”Man I really need to buy some accessories!” But then, when I get a little money, I spend it on clothes. Clothes, clothes, clothes….my weakness. You know what I need to remember? That accesories can MAKE an outfit, they can change a whole look, they can make you like clothes that you had already lost interest in. So until I build up a better collection of jewelry, I am working with what I have for now. So here is my guide on using the jewelry that you have.

Clockwise Starting from Top Right: Stella & Dot (Pricey), Kohls (Cheap!), Anthropolgie (Affordable)

I love a great statement necklace! Sometimes I get to thinking that they are only for fancy shmancy outfits, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Pair it with a plain top and jeans and you have yourself an adorable outfit with no work at all. Sometimes statement pieces can be pricey, but they don’t have to be with places like Kohls, Target, Forever21 and Charming Charlie out there! Here are some tips for wearing a statement necklace:

~ Pair with a simple earring (or no earring at all)

~ Don’t get too caught up on color matching (a Red dress, with a red statement necklace is going overboard!)

~ Make sure the neckline of your top/dress accommodates the shape of the necklace

All my necklaces in these pictures are either homemade or bought from cheap stands at the mall. All other necklaces are from Stella & Dot and are perfect for layering

When you really do not have a lot to work with but you want your jewelry to make a statement, try layering one long necklace or a bunch of simple necklaces. This is my most tried and true method of jewelry wearing. One because I have more simple pieces that statement pieces, two because it makes cheap or simple jewelry look more sophisticated, and three because it goes with almost any neckline. Here are my tips for this look:

~ Create at lease 3 layers of necklace strand by either wrapping one necklace or layering many

~ Choose pieces that fall at all different levels

~Wear with any earring you want!  But try not to mix too many textures or metals. (Now a days wearing different metals together is perfectly fine but I wouldn’t wear gold, silver, pearls, leather AND turquoise)

Left to Right: Charming Charlie, Forever 21, Stella & Dot

Dramatic earrings are my favorite way to spice up an outfit! I don’t own very many, but the ones I do have I wear a lot! I actually prefer to wear dramatic earring to complete an outfit right now more than necklaces for one reason: Convenience! They do not get in my way as much when dealing with my littles (not to mention that I now have a baby who will soon be putting any necklace I am wearing in his mouth!) The only tip I have for wearing really dramatic earrings is to pair it with a simple necklace (like a single pendant or a strand of beads) or skip the necklace and go for something dramatic on your arm.

Clockwise from Top Right: Fossil leather bracelet, Michael Kors ring, Marc Jacobs watch , Stella & Dot bracelet, Marc Jacobs watch

And finally let’s talk about bracelets and rings. This is one area that I REALLY do not own too many items. This is because these are pieces that I like to go for Quality and not Quantity. I own a few nice pieces like a great watch, my wedding/engagement ring, and some higher end costume pieces. Mostly because these are the pieces that get wet or worn down from wearing often and they start to look awful pretty quickly if they are too cheap. And for someone like me who forgets to buy new jewelry, it is not a good combination. So here are my “arm candy” rules:

~ Invest in a gorgeous watch. I know this is not for everyone, but I am obsessed with pretty watches.

~ One or two high quality rings that can be layered or worn separate is enough.

~ Bracelets that can be layered or worn individually are perfect for more options

I am totally loving this. I’m kind of the opposite — I spend money on shoes and scarves and jewelry (i.e. accessories!) instead of clothes. Which, I guess is a good thing, because it means my clothes are a little more versatile, because I change a look so easily just by changing up the jewelry! Hooray! Thanks for the post. 🙂

Great tips! I tend to have more accessories than clothes, (accessories fit everybody!) but sometimes I struggle with layering. If you are looking for cheap-ish accessories I recently found Accessory Dash on fb, kind of a cool idea. She does an auction type thing every wed evening. I have ordered a few things from there. I adore the top Stella & Dot neklace -it’s been on my want list for a while!!

I absolutely love buying jewelry but I almost never remember to wear it. It’s a real issue! Thanks for sharing this article on getting the most out of your jewelry. It’s true that this is important to learn because the jewelry really makes the outfit. I like your idea to layer different necklaces to create a whole new look.

I just received my first job offer since raising my daughter. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in an office setting. I want to make sure I dress professionally while still being fashionable. I love your tip about layering one long necklace with a few simpler ones. I also think finding pieces that fall at different levels is another great idea. I’m wanting to get a few custom jewelry pieces too. Finding something that expresses my personality might help give me some more confidence.
