Face Contouring

Yesterday, over at Thirty Handmade Days, I shared how I get a bronzed, shimmery look which is so perfect for summer.  I didn’t go into detail about how I contour my face, so I thought I would do so today!

I don’t know about you, but there are some techniques that intimidate me.  They seem too hard or I would totally botch it up and look ridiculous.  One of those things, until recently, was contouring my face.  It just seemed like a little too much to do and I never gave it a true try.  Well, I have found a nice and easy way to do it which does not involve a lot of new, expensive products and it works!  It is pretty fool proof I think, so read on and then give it a try!

Contouring Face Makeup

How to contour your face with makeup

Now these next pictures aren’t my prettiest, proudest moment, but I wanted to make it as clear as possible for you all to see.  You take a yellow or light concealer or highlighter for all the lighter spots.  Under the eyes (I need lots of help there!), down the nose, middle of the forehead, well, you can see.  The darker color is actually just a darker shade of foundation.  It is L’Oreal True Match in Cappuccino.

The darker color you run along the outside of the nose and the brow bone.  You also want to run a strip starting just under your cheek bone up and out, as you can see.  Then some along your forehead, and just under your chin (you can’t see here).

You can do the contouring a few ways.  You can apply it all at once, like shown in the first picture and then blend and add foundation over that.  This will help it all blend together nicely.  Or, what I do, is apply the lighter color, the concealer or highlighter, first – under my foundation.  Then I add my one color foundation all over, then I add the contouring with the darker color.

Once you have it all blended, you can add your blush, on your cheek bone, up and out.  I add a little shimmer highlight above my cheek bone and an overall powder to even everything out!

What did I tell you, easy peezy, right?  Give it a try on an afternoon where you don’t have much to do, so you can master it.  Then, be bold and rock it!  I hope this post simplyfied a lot of things for you!  What do you think, have you done this before?  Do you have a different way of doing it?  Or are you like I was and it just intimidated you?

Hope you enjoyed it!

Thank you for this. I just got an airbrush makeup set and have been using it like crazy. I think I will try out this contouring technique with it.

I really like this look, but I’m so afraid of wearing that much makeup. I never wear anything more than mascara and lipstick, so I’m a little terrified to go all out like this, especially since I have such sensitive skin.

Hi Natalie, your contouring looks beautiful. I have a question. Is it OK to contour the nose as you do if you already have a prominent nose? If not, what other contour trick would I use?

    Thanks so much.

Yes! The darker color is meant to contour so that you nose appears smaller. Try contouring like I show in this post and then a little “V” on the tip of your nose and blend. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
